Sequence determinants of RNA G‐quadruplex unfolding by Arg‐rich regions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We show that Arg‐rich peptides selectively unfold RNA G‐quadruplexes, but not RNA stem‐loops or DNA/RNA duplexes. This length‐dependent activity is inhibited by acidic residues and is conserved among SR and SR‐related proteins (SRSF1, SRSF3, SRSF9, U1‐70K, and U2AF1).

Ground-ice origin and age on Herschel Island (Qikiqtaruk), Yukon, Canada

open access: yesQuaternary Science Advances, 2023
Glacial legacies preserved in permafrost such as buried glacial ice of the last ice age are of increasing concern in the Western Canadian Arctic. Permafrost collapse due to melting ground ice largely follows the margins of the maximum Laurentide Ice ...

Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...

METHANE IN GROUND ICE AND FROZEN SEDIMENTS IN THE COASTAL ZONE AND ON THE SHELF OF KARA SEA

open access: yesЛëд и снег, 2018
Summary Degradation of permafrost on the continental shelf and shores of the Arctic seas may be a main cause of the methane emission to the atmosphere from marine sediments.

Changes in Ground Temperature and Dynamics in Mountain Permafrost in the Swiss Alps

open access: yesFrontiers in Earth Science, 2021
Rising air temperatures and increasingly intense precipitation are being observed in the Swiss Alps. These changes strongly affect the evolution of the temperature regime and the dynamics of mountain permafrost. Changes occur at different rates depending

Realizing Colloidal Artificial Ice on Arrays of Optical Traps

open access: yes, 2006
We demonstrate how a colloidal version of artificial ice can be realized on optical trap lattices. Using numerical simulations, we show that this system obeys the ice rules and that for strong colloid-colloid interactions, an ordered ground state appears.

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

Water Migration and Segregated Ice Formation in Frozen Ground: Current Advances and Future Perspectives

open access: yesFrontiers in Earth Science, 2022
A characteristic of frozen ground is a tendency to form banded sequences of particle-free ice lenses separated by layers of ice-infiltrated soil, which produce frost heave.

Formation of Ground Ice [PDF]

open access: yesNature, 1870
I THINK the enclosed letter contains as good a description of the formation of ground ice as I have hitherto seen; I therefore send it to you, thinking it of sufficient interest to appear in NATURE.

Efficient demagnetization protocol for the artificial triangular spin ice

open access: yes, 2013
In this work we study demagnetization protocols for an artificial spin ice in a triangular geometry. Our results show that a simple hysteresis-like process is very efficient in driving the system to its ground state, even for a relatively strong disorder
