Shallow ground temperatures

open access: yes, 2000
The temperature in the ground changes according to daily or longer temperature cycles in the air. The amount of ground temperature change also diminishes rapidly with depth. Temperatures to a depth of 20 m, the approximate depth to which the yearly temperature cycle penetrates, are presented for various environments in the Mackenzie valley.

Development of geothermal field following the 2000 eruption of Usu volcano as revealed by ground temperature, resistivity and self-potential variations

open access: yesAnnals of Geophysics, 2007
The 2000 eruption of Usu volcano, NE Japan, took place on the foot of the somma, and formed a cryptodome of 65 m high accompanying numerous faults.

Construction of emergency snow shelters using the results of air, snow and ground temperature measurements

open access: yesSport i Turystyka, 2023
This paper presents the use of ground, snow, and air temperature measurements for the construction of makeshift snow shelters. In Poland, in the coldest places (the Tatra Mountains, the Orava Basin) the temperature values at the contact of the ...

Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...

Glacioclimatological investigations of the Institute of Geography, RAS, in the crater of Eastern Summit of Mt. Elbrus in 2020

open access: yesЛëд и снег, 2021
During the field campaign in August 18–30, 2020 the meteorological regime and heat balance of the glacier surface were investigated in the crater of Mt Elbrus Eastern Summit (5600 m a.s.l.) together with the GPR measurements of the ice thickness and ...

Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.

Spatial distribution of the snow thermal resistance on the Russian territory and its impact on the ground freezing and thawing

open access: yesЛëд и снег, 2016
The effect of the snow cover thermal resistance on dynamics of the ground (soil) freezing and thawing is analyzed with the use of numerical modeling. Model calculations show that when heights and densities of snow covers are different, but their thermal ...

Mapping the Main Characteristics of Permafrost on the Basis of a Permafrost-Landscape Map of Yakutia Using GIS

open access: yesLand, 2021
The purpose of this article was to compile four separate digital thematic maps of temperature and ice content of permafrost, the active layer thickness, and cryogenic processes in Yakutia as a basis for assessing changes to modern climate changes and ...

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.
