Symbolic Regression and Multi‐Objective Optimization of the Flory–Huggins Interaction Parameter for Hydrogels

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
We develop a data‐driven method to derive the mathematical expressions of the Flory–Huggins interaction parameter χ for the swelling behavior of temperature–responsive hydrogels. Starting from initial assumptions of χ, our workflow combines Bayesian optimization, Flory–Rehner theory, and symbolic regression to generate candidate χ expressions.

Is the Theory of Moral Reckoning in Nursing Ready for Modification?

open access: yesGrounded Theory Review: An International Journal
This paper is a personal reflection on the original theory of moral reckoning in nursing, which seeks to answer the question, “Is the Theory of Moral Reckoning in Nursing Ready for Modification?” I was reminded recently to pick up some data I had ...

Canonical Ground Horn Theories

open access: yes, 2013
An abstract framework of canonical inference based on proof orderings is applied to ground Horn theories with equality. A finite presentation that makes all normal-form proofs available is called saturated. To maximize the chance that a saturated presentation be finite, it should also be contracted, in which case it is deemed canonical.

Influence of Test Temperature and Test Frequency on Fatigue Life of Aluminum Alloy EN AW‐2618A

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The influence of test temperature and test frequency on the fatigue life of EN AW‐2618A is investigated. High‐cycle fatigue tests are performed at different test temperatures and frequencies on the 1000 h/230°C overaged state. Both test parameters reduce fatigue life due to time‐dependent damage mechanisms.

Patient Behaviors

open access: yesGrounded Theory Review: An International Journal
This classic grounded theory study uncovered both a basic social process theory and an emerging typology of patients based upon their behavior as they react and adapt to the healthcare environment.

A Grounded Theory on Helping Behavior and Its Shaping Factors

open access: yesGrounded Theory Review: An International Journal, 2006
In social psychology, the attribution model of helping behavior suggests that beliefs of the helping target’s responsibility for the need for help evoke affective motivators such as feelings of pity, sympathy, or anger.

High‐Temperature Nanoindentation of Metals: Assessing Thermal Drift, Frame Compliance, and Chemical Composition Effects on the Reported Mechanical Properties

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Do not let thermal drift and instrument artifacts deceive high‐temperature nanoindentation results. We compare classical Oliver–Pharr and automatic image recognition analyses across steels and a Ni alloy to quantify these effects. Accounting for artifacts reveals systematic softening with temperature, while Cr and Ni additions boost resistance ...

Soft Mechanical‐Electrical Logic Using Liquid Metal‐Filled 3D‐Printed Architectures

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
We present 3D‐printed soft mechanical–electrical logic elements that use liquid metal–filled silicone tubes actuated by thermoplastic polyurethane/polylactic acid (TPU/PLA) architectures to produce Boolean operations. Complementary normally open and normally closed unit cells perform repeatable binary transitions and can be combined into more complex ...

Sampling in Grounded Theory

open access: yesGrounded Theory Review: An International Journal
Theoretical sampling “is controlled by the emerging theory [and is] the process of data collection for generating theory” (Glaser, 1978 p. 36).

Bolzano's Theory of Ground and Consequence

open access: yesNotre Dame Journal of Formal Logic, 2002
In order to present the basic elements and evaluate Bolzano's theory of grounding, the author considers and discusses the three following concepts: the concept of an epistemic reason, the concept of causality, and the concept of logical deducibility. Bolzano's positive account of grounding is reconstructed in an axiomatic form as well.
