The Radical Groundwater Storage Test

Scientific American, 2017
In this article, the author discusses help towards communities across California and the world through new ways for capturing floods and surviving droughts. Topics include climate change, rising population and changing precipitation patterns making historical cycle between droughts and floods more intense, depletion of aquifers as farmers and ...

Spatial Variability of Groundwater Storage in Pakistan

2021
In recent years, the use of Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) data has emerged as a valuable tool for investigating groundwater resources in data-scarce regions. This chapter reports on a study carried out to investigate and understand trends in the spatial variability of groundwater storage of Pakistan.

Groundwater Storage Variations in India

2018
In recent years, intense abstraction of groundwater has led to depletion in groundwater storage (GWS) in India, the second most populous country in the world. In this chapter, we demonstrate our work on estimating groundwater storage over India by using data from the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) satellite mission to study long-term ...

Groundwater Storage and Sustainable Stream Flows

Journal AWWA, 2005
Stream flows and associated aquatic ecosystems have been altered in many streams and rivers as a result of human activity. Efforts to restore streams to more “normative” conditions are occurring thoughout the United States. The Nature Conservancy's Sustainable Waters program (2005) is actively supporting stream‐flow restoration at more than 300 sites ...

Groundwater storage—The Western Experience

Journal AWWA, 2003
Water suppliers may be familiar with small‐scale aquifer storage and recovery projects but typically are unaware of the potential for using large‐scale groundwater storage projects as an alternative to construction of new surface water supply reservoirs.

Groundwater storage in adaptation to climate change

Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers - Water Management, 2013
The Trust project, funded by the European Commission's Life+ programme and the Italian Ministry of Environment, aims to identify adaptation and mitigation measures to counteract the impacts of climate change on the groundwater of the upper plain in the Veneto and Friuli regions in northeastern Italy.

Groundwater storage in Africa

2017
This 5 km resolution grid presents groundwater storage in Africa (in mm). This parameter was estimated by combining the saturated aquifer thickness and effective porosity of aquifers across Africa. For each aquifer flow/storage type an effective porosity range was assigned based on a series of studies across Africa and surrogates in other parts of the ...

Influence of Groundwater Hydraulic Gradient on Bank Storage Metrics

Groundwater, 2014
Abstract The hydraulic gradient between aquifers and rivers is one of the most variable properties in a river/aquifer system. Detailed process understanding of bank storage under hydraulic gradients is obtained from a two‐dimensional numerical model of a variably saturated aquifer slice perpendicular to a river.

CO2 Storage related Groundwater Impacts and Protection

Grundwasser, 2016
Injection of CO2 into the deep subsurface will affect physical and chemical conditions in the storage environment. Hence, geological CO2 storage can have potential impacts on groundwater resources. Shallow freshwater can only be affected if leakage pathways facilitate the ascent of CO2 or saline formation water.

On the storage coefficient and the equations of groundwater flow

Journal of Geophysical Research, 1966
Specific storage of an elastic aquifer is redefined, and the storage coefficient which was first computed by C. E. Jacob is derived in the transition from three-dimensional flow to two-dimensional flow. The equation for groundwater flow in a homogeneous, isotropic medium is derived from the exact expression of Darcy's law for compressible fluid flow.
