Cell wall target fragment discovery using a low‐cost, minimal fragment library

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
LoCoFrag100 is a fragment library made up of 100 different compounds. Similarity between the fragments is minimized and 10 different fragments are mixed into a single cocktail, which is soaked to protein crystals. These crystals are analysed by X‐ray crystallography, revealing the binding modes of the bound fragment ligands.

Pneumococcal carriage in sub-Saharan Africa--a systematic review. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
BACKGROUND: Pneumococcal epidemiology varies geographically and few data are available from the African continent. We assess pneumococcal carriage from studies conducted in sub-Saharan Africa (sSA) before and after the pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV)

Human streptococcus agalactiae strains in aquatic mammals and fish [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
<p>Background: In humans, Streptococcus agalactiae or group B streptococcus (GBS) is a frequent coloniser of the rectovaginal tract, a major cause of neonatal infectious disease and an emerging cause of disease in non-pregnant adults.

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

Capsular Typing Method for Streptococcus agalactiae Using Whole-Genome Sequence Data. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Group B streptococcus (GBS) capsular serotypes are major determinants of virulence and affect potential vaccine coverage. Here we report a whole-genome-sequencing-based method for GBS serotype assignment. This method shows strong agreement (kappa of 0.92)

PARP inhibitors elicit distinct transcriptional programs in homologous recombination competent castration‐resistant prostate cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
PARP inhibitors are used to treat a small subset of prostate cancer patients. These studies reveal that PARP1 activity and expression are different between European American and African American prostate cancer tissue samples. Additionally, different PARP inhibitors cause unique and overlapping transcriptional changes, notably, p53 pathway upregulation.

Group B Streptococcus (Streptococcus agalactiae) Screening During Pregnancy

open access: yesJournal of Rawalpindi Medical College, 2014
Background:An audit trial was conducted to review our practice of Universal GBS screening for our pregnant patients and its effect on fetal outcome.

Group B Streptococcus Infected Tenosynovitis in Diabetic Foot Ulcers

open access: yesFoot & Ankle Orthopaedics, 2020
Category: Diabetes; Other Introduction/Purpose: The incidence of Streptococcus agalactiae (Group B Streptococcus, GBS) infection in diabetic foot ulcers (DFU) has been on the rise. Severe soft tissue damage, which often leads to septicemia and amputation,

Interspecies Interactions Between Streptococcus Mutans and Streptococcus Agalactiae in vitro

open access: yesFrontiers in Cellular and Infection Microbiology, 2020
Streptococcus mutans is an oral species closely associated with dental caries. As an early oral colonizer, S. mutans utilizes interspecies coaggregation to promote the colonization of subsequent species and affect polymicrobial pathogenesis.

Preparing for Group B Streptococcus vaccine. Attitudes of pregnant women in two countries

open access: yesHuman Vaccines & Immunotherapeutics, 2023
Group B Streptococcus (GBS) vaccines, designed to be given to pregnant women, are in clinical trials. There is an opportunity to conduct preparatory research now to understand the drivers of and barriers to GBS vaccine acceptance.
