Europe’s Double Threat: Evolving patterns of compound heatwaves and droughts

open access: yesInternational Journal of Applied Earth Observations and Geoinformation
Compound Hot and Dry Events (CHDEs), the co-occurrence of heatwaves (HWs) and dry events (DEs), are intensifying across Europe, heightening risks to human health, agriculture, and ecosystems. This study quantifies the spatiotemporal evolution, frequency,

Design and analysis strategies for robust microbiome ageing research

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The gut microbiome changes with age and associates with age‐related morbidity and mortality, establishing it as a potential biomarker and intervention target for ageing. Realising this potential requires methodological rigour, yet distinguishing biological signals from methodological artefacts remains challenging across cohorts. This review provides an

The Application of Reinforcement Learning to Pumps—A Systematic Literature Review

open access: yesMachines
Reinforcement learning, a subset of machine learning in the field of engineering informatics, has revolutionized the decision-making and control of industrial pumping systems. A set of 100 peer-reviewed papers on the application of reinforcement learning

ABL kinase‐dependent phosphorylation of SH proteins promotes their direct interaction with CRK family SH2 domains

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
CT10 regulator of kinase (CRK) and CRK‐Like (CRKL) are signaling adaptors driving cell adhesion, motility, differentiation, and proliferation. SH2‐domain containing (SH) proteins are enriched in YXXP motifs which when phosphorylated create preferred binding sites for CRK family SH2 domains.

Democracy under uncertainty: The ‘wisdom of crowds’ and the free-rider problem in group decision making

open access: yes
We introduce a game theory model of individual decisions to cooperate by contributing personal resources to group decisions versus by free-riding on the contributions of other members.

Reconstructing enzyme evolution by protein engineering

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Natural enzyme evolution can be retraced by protein engineering methods such as directed evolution, rational design, and ancestral sequence reconstruction. These approaches reveal how enzymes emerged from ligand‐binding scaffolds, developed varying substrate preferences, formed oligomeric complexes, adapted to environmental changes, and evolved novel ...

The impact of resources on decision making

open access: yes, 2012
Decision making is a significant activity within industry and although much attention has been paid to the manner in which goals impact on how decision making is executed, there has been less focus on the impact decision making resources can have.

The role of miR‐335‐5p in the redifferentiation of BRAF p.V600E thyroid cancers

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
The BRAF p.V600E mutation promotes thyroid cancer dedifferentiation and radioiodine resistance. Using a network approach, we identified miR‐335‐5p as a key regulator of BRAF‐mutated thyroid tumors. Restoring miR‐335‐5p increased thyroid‐specific gene expression and iodine uptake in cells and organoids.

Group and individual risk preferences : a lottery-choice experiment [PDF]

open access: yes
This paper focuses on decision making under risk, comparing group and individual risk preferences in a lottery-choice experiment inspired by Holt and Laury (2002).
