Co-circulation of genetically distinct highly pathogenic avian influenza A clade 2.3.4.4 (H5N6) viruses in wild waterfowl and poultry in Europe and East Asia, 2017–18 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5 clade 2.3.4.4 viruses were first introduced into Europe in late 2014 and re-introduced in late 2016, following detections in Asia and Russia.

Low‐level human memory T and B cells recognising avian influenza hemagglutinins are poorly responsive to existing seasonal influenza vaccines

open access: yesClinical &Translational Immunology, Volume 14, Issue 12, 2025.
In this study, we found low but detectable antibody responses against H5 and H7 avian influenza hemagglutinin in unexposed human cohorts. B‐ and T‐cell responses against these avian‐origin hemagglutinins were poorly boosted by seasonal influenza vaccination.

Molecular Evolution of the H5 and H7 Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza Virus Haemagglutinin Cleavage Site Motif

open access: yesReviews in Medical Virology, Volume 35, Issue 1, January 2025.
ABSTRACT Avian influenza viruses are ubiquitous in the Anatinae subfamily of aquatic birds and occasionally spill over to poultry. Infection with low pathogenicity avian influenza viruses generally leads to subclinical or mild clinical disease. In contrast, highly pathogenic avian influenza viruses emerge from low pathogenic forms and can cause severe ...

Burden of Common Respiratory Pathogens Among Cats in China

open access: yesVeterinary Medicine and Science, Volume 11, Issue 1, January 2025.
Feline respiratory pathogens alone or in combinations were high, indicating a heavy burden of respiratory infections among cats. Mono‐infections involving one bacteria or virus were detected in 44.7% of samples, whereas coinfections were detected in 47.5% of samples.

Seroprevalence of Avian Influenza A(H5N6) Virus Infection, Guangdong Province, China, 2022. [PDF]

open access: yesEmerg Infect Dis
In 2022, we assessed avian influenza A virus subtype H5N6 seroprevalence among the general population in Guangdong Province, China, amid rising numbers of human infections. Among the tested samples, we found 1 to be seropositive, suggesting that the virus poses a low but present risk to the general population.

Avian influenza overview November 2018 – February 2019 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
No human infections due to highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) A(H5N8) or A(H5N6) viruses ‐ detected in wild birds and poultry outbreaks in Europe ‐ have been reported so far and the risk of zoonotic transmission to the general public in Europe is ...

Novel H7N2 and H5N6 Avian Influenza A Viruses in Sentinel Chickens: A Sentinel Chicken Surveillance Study

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2016
In 2014, surveillance of sentinel chicken for avian influenza virus was conducted in aquatic bird habitat near Wuxi City, Jiangsu Province, China. Two H7N2, one H5N6, and two H9N2 viruses were isolated. Sequence analysis revealed that the H7N2 virus is a
