Labile heme in the intravascular compartment results in the induction of proinflammatory and prothrombotic complications. Activation of TLR4 signalling by heme has a crucial role in these processes. We report the interaction of TLR4, MD2 and the TLR4‐MD2 complex with heme and the consequences thereof.
