Nucleolar size in lymphocytes and haemocytes of different species

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Histochemistry, 2009
The number of nucleoli in a cell and nucleolar area vary according to the cell. We compared nucleoli in mammalian circulating lymphocytes and insect circulating haemocytes. An increased nucleolar coefficient correlated with a lowered nucleoli size.

Bivalve Haemocyte Subpopulations: A Review

open access: yesFrontiers in Immunology, 2022
Bivalve molluscs stand out for their ecological success and their key role in the functioning of aquatic ecosystems, while also constituting a very valuable commercial resource. Both ecological success and production of bivalves depend on their effective immune defence function, in which haemocytes play a central role acting as both the undertaker of ...

Investigations on the role of haemocytes in drosophila host defence [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
Innate immunity in Drosophila is mediated via two major responses, humoral and cellular immunity. Induction of the former is characterised by the production of antimicrobial peptides (AMP) via the Toll and Imd pathway.

Cellular immune response of Amblyomma sculptum and Amblyomma americanum to entomopathogenic fungi: Implications for biological tick control. [PDF]

open access: yesMed Vet Entomol
Amblyomma sculptum showed a plasmatocyte‐dominant haemocyte profile. Beauveria bassiana increased plasmatocytes and reduced granulocytes, whereas Metarhizium robertsii did not cause significant changes. Amblyomma americanum showed a granulocyte‐dominant haemocyte profile. Beauveria bassiana reduced total haemocytes and granulocytes. B.

Differences in the gene expression profiles of Haemocytes from Schistosome-susceptible and -resistant Biomphalaria glabrata exposed to Schistosoma mansoni excretory-secretory products [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
During its life cycle, the helminth parasite Schistosoma mansoni uses the freshwater snail Biomphalaria glabrata as an intermediate host to reproduce asexually generating cercariae for infection of the human definitive host.

Crustins: enigmatic WAP domain-containing antibacterial proteins from crustaceans [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Crustins are antibacterial proteins of ca. 7–14 kDa with a characteristic four-disulphide core-containing whey acidic protein (WAP) domain, expressed by the circulating haemocytes of crustaceans.

A haemocyte tropism for an arbovirus

open access: yesJournal of General Virology, 2009
Horizontally transmitted mosquito-borne viruses enter the midgut with a blood meal then disseminate to infect the salivary glands. En route to the salivary glands, these viruses encounter the plasma (haemolymph) and blood cells (haemocytes). Haemocytes respond to a variety of micro-organisms, but their role in virus replication and dissemination has ...

Morphological Characterisation of Haemocytes in the Mealworm Beetle Tenebrio molitor (Coleoptera, Tenebrionidae)

open access: yesInsects, 2021
The immunocompetence of the mealworm beetle Tenebrio molitor has been well investigated at molecular and physiological levels, but information on morphological and functional characteristics of its immune cells (haemocytes) is still scarce and ...

Effect of Adding Chamomile and Cinnamon Oils to Larval Diet of Silkworm Bombyx mori L. on its Biological Parameters [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Plant Protection and Pathology, 2022
The quality and quantity of silk produced by the mulberry silkworm, Bombox mori L. are highly influenced by larval feeding, larval ages, care, and types of races.

Cellular response to bacterial infection in the grasshopper Oxya chinensis

open access: yesBiology Open, 2019
Oxya chinensis is one of the most widespread grasshopper species found in China and one of the most common pests against rice. In view of the importance of haemocytes in insect immunity in general, and the lack of information on the haemocytes of O ...
