Human Haemoglobin ??? Northfield

BioDrugs, 2003
PolyHeme is a chemically modified haemoglobin solution derived from human blood. It has been developed by Northfield Laboratories as an alternative to transfused blood for the treatment of acute blood loss (such as in trauma or surgery). Single molecules of haemoglobin are toxic to the kidneys and cause vasoconstriction.

Haemoglobin Synthesis in α-Thalassaemia (Haemoglobin H Disease)

Nature, 1967
In haemoglobin H disease, the rate of synthesis of the α-chains of haemoglobin is depressed, while that of the β-chains remains normal. It is shown that part of this excess of β-chains forms a pool capable of further participation in haemoglobin synthesis.

The unstable haemoglobins

Blood Reviews, 1993
The unstable haemoglobin haemolytic anaemias result from the presence in the red cell of a structurally abnormal haemoglobin variant. There are many mutations producing unstable haemoglobins; most are single amino acid replacements that affect a few key areas of the haemoglobin structure. A wide range of haemoglobin instability is evident from in vitro
