Reactivation of a Bacillus Calmette–Guérin Scar Following Routine Infant Vaccination

open access: yesClinical Case Reports, Volume 14, Issue 8, August 2026.
ABSTRACT A 4‐month‐old infant developed erythema and induration at a Bacillus Calmette–Guérin (BCG) scar shortly after routine DTaP‐IPV‐Hib and pneumococcal vaccination. Laboratory findings were normal, and the lesion resolved spontaneously without treatment.

Prevalence, Antimicrobial Resistance, and Genetic Diversity of Non‐Typeable Streptococcus pneumoniae Carriage: A Systematic Review and Meta‐Analysis

open access: yesHealth Science Reports, Volume 9, Issue 8, August 2026.
ABSTRACT Background Non‐typeable Streptococcus pneumoniae (NT‐Sp) strains lack detectable capsules and are often missed by traditional serotyping. While associated primarily with asymptomatic carriage, NT‐Sp has emerged as a key player in antimicrobial resistance (AMR) gene dissemination and serotype replacement in the post‐vaccine era. This systematic

Increased Risk of Infections and Mortality Following Fractures in Multiple Myeloma: A Nationwide Population‐Based Retrospective Cohort Study

open access: yesHealth Science Reports, Volume 9, Issue 8, August 2026.
ABSTRACT Background and Aims To determine whether patients with MM face higher risks of hospitalized infections and long‐term all‐cause mortality after a first fracture than non‐MM fracture patients at the population level. Methods We performed a nationwide retrospective cohort study using Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database from 2001 to

De novo or Salvage? Nucleotide Availability as a Driver of Bacterial Adaptation and Virulence

open access: yesMicrobiologyOpen, Volume 15, Issue 4, August 2026.
Bacterial pathogens survive in different host environments by switching between making nucleotides by de novo synthesis and scavenging them from the host. This flexibility supports growth and virulence making nucleotide metabolism an attractive therapeutic target.

Role of ClpX and MsrA/B in the Oxidative and Cell Wall Stress Response in Bacillus anthracis Sterne

open access: yesMicrobiologyOpen, Volume 15, Issue 4, August 2026.
Methionine sulfoxide reductase (msrA/B) is an oxidative response enzyme that reduces oxidized methionine residues to maintain protein function. Surprisingly, loss of MsrA/B does not increase sensitivity to hydrogen peroxide or paraquat‐induced oxidative stress in Bacillus anthracis Sterne.

Cathepsin B, Airway Pathogens, and Inflammation in the Lower Airways of Children With Cystic Fibrosis

open access: yesPediatric Pulmonology, Volume 61, Issue 8, August 2026.
ABSTRACT Introduction Dysregulated protease activity contributes to airway inflammation and tissue remodeling in cystic fibrosis (CF); however, the role of the lysosomal cysteine protease Cathepsin B (CTSB) remains incompletely defined. This cross‐sectional study investigates relationships between pro‐CTSB and mature CTSB activity with CF‐specific ...

Modeling the lung‒brain axis in critical illness: Multifactorial crosstalk through organoids and organ‐on‐a‐chip system

open access: yesVIEW, Volume 7, Issue 4, August 2026.
Patients in intensive care units often experience lung injuries, complicated by brain problems. Advanced laboratory tools, organoids, and organs‐on‐chips facilitated the study of multiorgan interactions, help us understand the communication between the lungs and brain.

Iron Physiology and Its Impact on Atopic Diseases: An EAACI Taskforce Report

open access: yesAllergy, Volume 81, Issue 8, Page 2675-2712, August 2026.
ABSTRACT Iron is essential for oxygen transport, energy metabolism, and immune regulation. Yet iron deficiency is the most common micronutrient disorder across all age groups, affecting nearly one quarter of the global population. Iron deficiency triggers nutritional immunity, a host defense mechanism that withholds and redistributes iron, contributing

An epidemiological study of Haemophilus influenzae at a Brazilian day care center

open access: yesBrazilian Journal of Infectious Diseases
Day care centers are a relatively new phenomenon in Brazil that bring together large numbers of young children susceptible to contagious diseases. Haemophilus influenzae (Hi) is an important infection in the age range of those attending day care centers.
