Abnormality of the Hair in Cartilage-Hair Hypoplasia

The scalp hair in a patient with cartilage-hair hypoplasia was studied by light-microscopy, amino-acid analysis and tensile testing. Measurement of the hair shaft diameter, using an ocular micrometer, confirmed <i>McKusick’s </i>observation that the hairs were thinner than those seen in normal individuals.

The value of removing hair in preparation for neurosurgery is addressed in detail. One neurosurgeon's series, accrued over 40 consecutive months, of 638 prospectively examined, consecutive cases is the basis of this report. The overall surgical wound infection rate was 1.1%.

A case of hair casts in an 8-year-old girl is described. The disorder is rare, the first description dating back to 1897 with a total of only 31 cases reported in the literature since then.
