Hairy Vetch Management for No‐Till Organic Corn Production
Agronomy Journal, 2010Rolling‐crimping to control hairy vetch (Vicia villosa Roth) may make organic no‐till corn (Zea mays L.) possible. This study investigated how rolling‐crimping date and growth stage of the cover crop affected hairy vetch control and if a rolled‐crimped hairy vetch cover crop could supply weed control for no‐till corn.

Mitigation of Seed Germination Impediments in Hairy Vetch
Agronomy Journal, 2010Hairy vetch (Vicia villosa Roth) is a promising winter cover crop for northern climates, but germination can be limited by low soil moisture conditions. Farmers may be reluctant to use hairy vetch, concerned that hard seed will emerge as weeds in succeeding crops.

Evidence of cyanamide production in hairy vetchVicia villosa
Natural Product Research, 2006Cyanamide (NH(2)CN) has recently been isolated as a plant growth inhibitor from Vicia villosa, which is the first discovery of cyanamide from natural sources. To reveal the presence of the biosynthesized cyanamide in plants, 3.4 mM potassium ((15)N)nitrate was administered to 15- to 35-day-old plants of V. villosa, from which the cyanamide was purified
