The Substitution of Hard Seeds for Grit

The Journal of Wildlife Management, 1942
In connection with our food-habits studies of the Blue and Ruffed Grouse. respectively, we noted a relationship, between the volumes of grit and of hard seeds found in the birds' stomachs. Material from several other species being available, a more detailed study of the subject was made.

Seed coat ultrastructure of hard-seeded and soft-seeded varieties of Vicia sativa

Turkish Journal of Botany, 2013
The mature seed coat structure in hard-seeded and soft-seeded varieties of Vicia sativa L. was examined by scanning and transmission electron microscopy to investigate differentiation in cytological and morphological features between these varieties. The outer layer of the seed coats was composed of macrosclereid (Malpighian) cells in the hard-seeded ...

‘Hard Seeds’ in Leguminosæ

Nature, 1926
WHEN offered ideal conditions for germination there commonly occur in seed of most cultivated Leguminosae, seeds which do not absorb moisture and, in consequence, fail to swell up and germinate: they do not soften, and are therefore known generally as hard seeds. This inability to absorb moisture endures for an indefinite period, extending possibly for

Phenolics in the Seed Coat of Wild Soybean (Glycine soja) and Their Significance for Seed Hardness and Seed Germination

Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, 2010
Hardseededness in annual wild soybean (Glycine soja Sieb. Et Zucc.) is a valuable trait that affects the germination, viability, and quality of stored seeds. Two G. soja ecotypes native to Shandong Province of China have been used to identify the phenolics in the seed coat that correlate with the seed hardness and seed germination.

Enhancement of seed germination in hard coated seeds of Cassia fistula L.

Journal of Non-Timber Forest Products, 2005
Cassia fistula L. is an important source of timber and non-timber forest produce. The seeds of this specie suffer from seed coat imposed dormancy and require pre-treatment to enhance germination. This study was undertaken to identify better pre-treatment for enhancement of germination in hard coated seeds of Cassia fistula.

IMPACT DAMAGE TO SOYBEAN SEED AS AFFECTED BY SURFACE HARDNESS AND SEED ORIENTATION

Transactions of the ASAE, 1990
ABSTRACT Soybean seeds at four moistures were impacted using three impact surfaces, four impact velocities, and five seed orientations. A steel impact surface caused the most damage (41% germination, 54% cracks or splits) and a soft polyurethane surface caused the least (87% germination, no cracks or splits).

Hard Seeds in Faba Bean

1982
Hard seededness is a type of seed dormancy resulting from the impermeability of the seed coat to water or gases, or physical resistance to embryo expansion. Hard faba bean seeds fail to germinate readily when all necessary conditions are provided and adversely affect the cooking quality.

Hard Seeds in Panicurn coloraturn, Stapf

Nature, 1933
Panicum coloratum is a grass which occurs naturally in East Africa in areas of comparatively low rainfall. In the course of a preliminary study of the indigenous pasture plants of Kenya, this species has shown considerable promise. Efforts to establish it from seed have, however, been unsuccessful, although an abundant crop of apparently good seed is ...
