ADeLe: A description language for approximate hardware

Future Generation Computer Systems, 2020
Abstract Approximate computing techniques enable significant improvements in energy efficiency by producing potentially incorrect outputs for a small subset of inputs of a given application. Approximations introduced at the hardware level, in particular, may be applicable in multiple scenarios and offer high power savings.

Hardware design and description languages in IBM

IBM Journal of Research and Development, 1984
Hardware design languages (HDLs) allow computer hardware to be described in sufficient detail to be simulated and built, such a description being at a sufficiently high level of abstraction to make the complete design readily intelligible to anyone skilled in that language. A number of HDLs have been developed and are in use in IBM.

HML, a novel hardware description language and its translation to VHDL

IEEE Transactions on Very Large Scale Integration (vlsi) Systems, 2000
We present hardware ML (HML), an innovative hardware description language (HDL) based on the functional programming language SML. Features of HML not found in other HDL's include polymorphic types and advanced type checking and type inference techniques.

Vhdl-ams---a hardware description language for analog and mixed-signal applications

, 1999
This paper provides an overview of the VHDL-AMS hardware description language for analog and mixed-signal applications, by describing the major elements of the language and illustrating them by examples.

The Assignment Statement in Hardware Description Languages

Computer, 1977
The basic character of a programming language or a hardware design language is determined by the data types on which it operates and how changes in their values are made. Few of the papers on specific hardware design languages have included a discussion of this basic part, of the languages' semantics.

A survey of computer hardware description languages in the USA

Computer-Aided Design, 1974
A digital system can be described at several levels. 1) The highest level is the algorithmic level which specifies only the algorithm to be used for solving a design problem. 2) The second level is the PMS (Processor, Memory, Switch) level which describes a system by processors, memory components, peripheral units, and switching networks.

The impact of hardware description languages on the education of hardware design

Proceedings., Eighth University/Government/Industry Microelectronics Symposium, 2003
The author describes hardware description languages (HDLs) and various levels of abstraction. He then examines applications of these languages for teaching purposes. This is illustrated by use of examples in commonly used teaching HDLs. The VHSIC HDL (VHDL) and the possibility of its being used as a teaching tool are described.

Modeling and simulation with hardware description languages

Proceedings. Tenth Annual IEEE International ASIC Conference and Exhibit (Cat. No.97TH8334), 2002
The role of HDL modeling and simulation in the design process is discussed. The modeling process involves both model and model test development. Simulation is used to ensure model correctness. Being able to create HDL models of complex systems is imperative in designing today's systems, but model creation and validation is itself a complex task ...
