This article will analyze the uncertainties around collecting and classifying Hydnora africana in the first half of the nineteenth century. Emerging from the distinctive dryland ecologies of South Africa, Hydnora was interpreted as strange and cryptic by Europeans primarily because it is a root parasite—a complex floral trait that was little understood.

The physiological anatomy of the haustorium of Striga hermonthica (Del.) Benth. (Scrophulariaceae). [PDF]
The parasitic angiosperms are a diverse group of plants that obtain a proportion of the resources needed for growth, development and reproduction by parasitizing other flowering plants.

Harnessing plant susceptibility genes into strategies for enhanced disease resistance
Integrated model of S gene modules in plant pathogen interactions. This model summarises representative host susceptibility modules that can be exploited by bacterial, fungal and viral pathogens. In the bacterial infection module, Xanthomonas transcription activator‐like effectors activate OsSWEET14 through effector‐binding elements in its promoter ...

We identified ZmJAZ12 as a key susceptibility regulator that suppresses JA/SA‐mediated defence through its interaction with ZmMYC5, thereby uncovering a hormonal crosstalk mechanism governing maize resistance to southern corn rust. ABSTRACT Southern corn rust (SCR), caused by the biotrophic fungus Puccinia polysora, severely threatens maize yield ...

ABSTRACT Tandem kinases are emerging regulators of plant immunity, but the downstream defense programs they activate remain poorly understood. Stripe rust, caused by Puccinia striiformis f. sp. tritici (Pst), is a major constraint on global wheat production. The Yr15 resistance gene, derived from wild emmer wheat, encodes the tandem kinase protein WTK1.

Phelipanche aegyptiaca parasitizes a wide range of plants, including important crops, and causes serious damage to their production. P. aegyptiaca develops a specialized intrusive organ called a haustorium that establishes connections to the host’s xylem

Abstract Premise Root hemiparasites form haustoria in belowground roots of hosts to extract nutrients and water from the surrounding hosts. Through parasitic symbiosis, these plants disproportionately affect plant communities relative to their abundance by reducing host size, altering nutrient flow, and eventually increasing local biodiversity.

This review focuses on mitogen‐activated protein kinase (MAPK) activation and summarizes how plants regulate and integrate MAPK signaling in modulating plant immune responses. It also examines the effectors pathogens have evolved to manipulate MAPK activation and thereby inhibit plant immunity.
