Data Transmission Using HDD as Microphone

2020
The technology of Covert Channel is often used for communications between computers and the Internet with high sensitivity or security levels. Presently, some research were carried out on covert channel using computer screen light radiation, speakers, electromagnetic leakage, etc. In this paper, the technology of SoundHammer is studied.

Large Diameter HDD Pipe Installations and HDD Assist Techniques

Pipelines 2008, 2008
As the transmission side of the energy industry continues to expand, the demand for larger and longer natural gas and oil pipeline installations has increased significantly. Large diameter HDD pipeline projects are growing in number. But, with any type of pipeline installation, the larger the project, the greater the chance there is of running into ...

Approximate nearest neighbor search on HDD

2009 IEEE 12th International Conference on Computer Vision Workshops, ICCV Workshops, 2009
Nearest Neighbor (NN) search plays important roles in Computer Vision algorithms. Especially, NN search on immensely large amount of image data set stored on the Internet is getting highlighted. For dealing with such huge data, main memory of a single PC is insufficient.

Analysis of Discharge Mechanism in HDD

IEEE Transactions on Device and Materials Reliability, 2011
This paper discusses a discharge mechanism between the head and disk in hard disk drive. The three phases of the discharge mechanism which depend on the voltage difference between the head and disk were observed. In phase 1, no electric discharge occurs. In phase 2, only electric discharge occurs.

Improved mechanical designs for HDD

Digest of the Asia-Pacific Magnetic Recording Conference, 2003
This paper relates to the improvement of mechanical design, in particularly of suspension, for hard disk drives (HDD). The performance of suspension, in term of resonant frequency, stiffness and shock resistance, has been improved in tandem with increasing data density over the past decades.

On the Design of SMR HDD Block Device Driver

2020 IEEE 22nd International Conference on High Performance Computing and Communications; IEEE 18th International Conference on Smart City; IEEE 6th International Conference on Data Science and Systems (HPCC/SmartCity/DSS), 2020
This paper studies the design of host-managed SMR HDD. To obviate any changes to existing filesystems and applications, this paper focuses on making the host-side block device driver solely responsible for managing SMR HDD. The key is to make block device driver elastically utilize the host-side memory resource to realize address translation and ...

Warebeth HDD Platform

2018
This report sets out the results of an archaeological field evaluation undertaken by Orkney Research Centre for Archaeology (ORCA) on land at Clook Farm, Innertown, Stromness, Orkney prior to development. The works demonstrated the presence of extensive remains on site likely to be domestic and Viking/ Norse in character. They comprised of large midden

Robust friction compensation in HDDs

2009 Asia-Pacific Magnetic Recording Conference, 2009
Friction compensation via position measurement only in hard disk drives (HDD) is considered in this paper. A robust nonlinear adaptive controller is designed which uses only the motor position (i.e., the output) for feedback and does not require knowledge of electromechanical system parameters, such as parameters in the friction model, rotor inertia ...

Active damping in HDD actuator

2000 Asia-Pacific Magnetic Recording Conference. Digests of APMRC2000 on Mechanical and Manufacturing Aspects of HDD (Cat. No.00EX395), 2001
One of the limitations inherent in high-track-density hard disk drive design is the effect of actuator mechanical resonant modes on the head-positioning servo. The first servo bandwidth limiting mode is the so-called "butterfly mode," which is the major mode in the head mechanical transfer functions and can not be avoided through mechanical design.

Use case study of HDD-SSD hybrid storage, distributed storage and HDD storage on OpenStack

Proceedings of the 19th International Database Engineering & Applications Symposium on - IDEAS '15, 2014
For typical IaaS cloud usage, frequent provisioning of virtual volumes is needed. However, performance of HDD storage is not sufficient and becomes bottleneck in IaaS cloud. In this paper, we studied a comparison of HDD-SSD hybrid storage, distributed storage and normal HDD storage as block storage of OpenStack Cinder and evaluated applicability of ...
