Future Options for HDD Storage
IEEE Transactions on Magnetics, 2009The HDD industry is at a critical technology cross roads and it is paramount that we quickly establish comprehensive paths to push beyond the superparamagnetic limit. Several promising technology options have been explored to increase the areal density beyond the limit such as bit patterned magnetic recording (BPMR), heat assisted magnetic recording ...

Servo controller design for high-bandwidth HDDs
IEEE Transactions on Magnetics, 2002Summary form only given For high TPI Hard Disk Drives (HDDs), wide servo bandwidth and fast seek settling time are needed. The servo bandwidth is primarily limited by the actuator's mechanical resonance modes. Including the actuator resonance mode in plant modeling gives an additional degree of freedom in controller design.

A Study of Beam Type Contact Heads for HDDS
Advances in Information Storage and Processing Systems, 1995Abstract Beam type contact heads, as a simplified model for investigating the head behavior during contact, were fabricated out of silicon by an anisotropic etching technique. An experimental set-up with an actuator, which could control the normal load with an accuracy of 10 μN, was also developed. While lowering the head toward the disk,

Rescuing Digital Data from Submerged HDD
2012As the increasing number of personal computers is involved in various criminal cases, the importance of the capability of extracting crucial digital data from these electromagnetic devices is getting emphasized. There are criminal cases where digital devices happen to be found in mud, water, and fire.

ACM Transactions on Storage
Deduplication and compression are powerful techniques to reduce the ratio between the quantity of logical data stored and the physical amount of consumed storage. Deduplication can impose significant performance overheads, as duplicate detection for large systems induces random accesses to the backend storage.
