Large Diameter HDD Pipe Installations and HDD Assist Techniques
Pipelines 2008, 2008As the transmission side of the energy industry continues to expand, the demand for larger and longer natural gas and oil pipeline installations has increased significantly. Large diameter HDD pipeline projects are growing in number. But, with any type of pipeline installation, the larger the project, the greater the chance there is of running into ...

Robust friction compensation in HDDs
2009 Asia-Pacific Magnetic Recording Conference, 2009Friction compensation via position measurement only in hard disk drives (HDD) is considered in this paper. A robust nonlinear adaptive controller is designed which uses only the motor position (i.e., the output) for feedback and does not require knowledge of electromechanical system parameters, such as parameters in the friction model, rotor inertia ...

Active damping in HDD actuator
2000 Asia-Pacific Magnetic Recording Conference. Digests of APMRC2000 on Mechanical and Manufacturing Aspects of HDD (Cat. No.00EX395), 2001One of the limitations inherent in high-track-density hard disk drive design is the effect of actuator mechanical resonant modes on the head-positioning servo. The first servo bandwidth limiting mode is the so-called "butterfly mode," which is the major mode in the head mechanical transfer functions and can not be avoided through mechanical design.

Development of contact recording head for HDD
IEEE Transactions on Magnetics, 1997A novel contact recording slider design for HDD, which continuously contacts a disk surface, was investigated. The design of the slider, which has a wide air bearing surface in the front and a contact portion in the rear, enables precise division of suspension load between hydrodynamic force and contact force under certain tolerances. Therefore, stable

A 128 Mb Chain FeRAM and System Design for HDD Application and Enhanced HDD Performance
IEEE Journal of Solid-State Circuits, 2011This paper demonstrates the hard disk drive (HDD) performance improvement by nonvolatile FeRAM cache. First, an array architecture and data path design of 128 Mb chain FeRAM to meet HDD specifications, and a total power supply system for HDD application are presented. A 1.6 GB/s read/write bandwidth with page length of 512 Byte HDD sector size, and the

Future Options for HDD Storage
IEEE Transactions on Magnetics, 2009The HDD industry is at a critical technology cross roads and it is paramount that we quickly establish comprehensive paths to push beyond the superparamagnetic limit. Several promising technology options have been explored to increase the areal density beyond the limit such as bit patterned magnetic recording (BPMR), heat assisted magnetic recording ...

HDD Micro-actuator Reliability Study
2007 Proceedings - Annual Reliability and Maintainability Sympsoium, 2007Seagate designed a micro-actuator that enables fine positioning by a dual-stage servo system to increase recording density of hard disk drives (HDDs). In this paper, a degradation accelerated life test (ALT) performed at Seagate using two stressors (temperature and AC voltage) is discussed.

Servo controller design for high-bandwidth HDDs
IEEE Transactions on Magnetics, 2002Summary form only given For high TPI Hard Disk Drives (HDDs), wide servo bandwidth and fast seek settling time are needed. The servo bandwidth is primarily limited by the actuator's mechanical resonance modes. Including the actuator resonance mode in plant modeling gives an additional degree of freedom in controller design.

HDD characterisation for A/V streaming applications
2002 Digest of Technical Papers. International Conference on Consumer Electronics (IEEE Cat. No.02CH37300), 2002This paper presents a model-based method for the characterization of the real-time streaming performance of hard disc drives (HDD) and shows how to extract the model parameters automatically from service time measurements of only standard read and write commands.
