Mitral Paravalvular Leak 3D Printing from 3D-Transesophageal Echocardiography

open access: yesAnatolian Journal of Cardiology, 2023
Background: Paravalvular leaks can be detected in almost 15% of patients after mitral valve prosthesis implantation. This complication can result in congestive heart failure and hemolysis.

Lumped parameter model for hemodynamic simulation of congenital heart diseases

open access: yesJournal of Physiological Sciences, 2017
The recent development of computer technology has made it possible to simulate the hemodynamics of congenital heart diseases on a desktop computer. However, multi-scale modeling of the cardiovascular system based on computed tomographic and magnetic ...

Role of skeletal muscle perfusion and insulin resistance in the effect of dietary sodium on heart function in overweight

open access: yesESC Heart Failure, 2021
Aims Weight excess and insulin resistance predispose to heart failure. High sodium consumption may contribute to the development of cardiac impairment in insulin‐resistant individuals by promoting inadequate skeletal muscle microvascular perfusion ...

Epidemiological aspects of heart diseases

open access: yesExperimental and Therapeutic Medicine, 2016
Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the leading cause of mortality worldwide. Coronary heart disease (CHD) is the main cause of mortality in heart patients following stroke, rheumatic heart disease and myocardial infarctions.

Effects of paraoxonase 1 gene polymorphisms on heart diseases

open access: yesMedicine, 2016
Background:Associations between paraoxonase 1 (PON1) gene polymorphisms and heart diseases (HD) risk remain inconsistent. In order to obtain address this issue we performed a meta-analysis to assess the association between the L55M and Q192R ...

Distinct clinical phenotypes of congestion in acute heart failure: characteristics, treatment response, and outcomes

open access: yesESC Heart Failure, 2020
Aims Patients with acute heart failure (AHF) are included into clinical trials regardless of differences in baseline clinical characteristics. The aim of this study was to assess patients with AHF according to the presence of central and/or peripheral ...

Hematopoietic (stem) cells—The elixir of life?

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The aging of HSCs (hematopoietic stem cells) and the blood system leads to the decline of other organs. Rejuvenating aged HSCs improves the function of the blood system, slowing the aging of the heart, kidney, brain, and liver, and the occurrence of age‐related diseases.

Phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinase as a target of pathogens—friend or foe?

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This graphical summary illustrates the roles of phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinases (PI4Ks). PI4Ks regulate key cellular processes and can be hijacked by pathogens, such as viruses, bacteria and parasites, to support their intracellular replication. Their dual role as essential host enzymes and pathogen cofactors makes them promising drug targets.

Molecular bases of circadian magnesium rhythms across eukaryotes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Circadian rhythms in intracellular [Mg2+] exist across eukaryotic kingdoms. Central roles for Mg2+ in metabolism suggest that Mg2+ rhythms could regulate daily cellular energy and metabolism. In this Perspective paper, we propose that ancestral prokaryotic transport proteins could be responsible for mediating Mg2+ rhythms and posit a feedback model ...

Epidemiology of heart failure

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Heart Failure, 2020
The heart failure syndrome has first been described as an emerging epidemic about 25 years ago. Today, because of a growing and ageing population, the total number of heart failure patients still continues to rise.
