ATG4B is required for mTORC1‐mediated anabolic activity and is associated with clinical outcomes in non‐small cell lung cancer

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The relationship between anabolic and catabolic processes governing lung cancer cell growth is nuanced. We show that ATG4B, an autophagy regulator, is elevated in lung cancer and that high ATG4B is associated with worse patient outcomes. Targeting ATG4B in cells reduces growth, protein synthesis, and mTORC1 activity, demonstrating a new relationship ...

Cardiac Myxoma

open access: yesAutopsy and Case Reports, 2016
Primary cardiac tumors (PCT) are rare, accounting for 0.0017-0.03% in autopsy series,1,2 in contrast to metastatic tumors of the heart, which are 30 times more frequent.3,4 Nearly 75% of PCT are benign and most often represented by a myxoma in 50% of ...

Dietary nitrate and nitrite protect against doxorubicin‐induced cardiac fibrosis and oxidative protein damage in tumor‐bearing mice

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Chemotherapies such as doxorubicin can have toxic effects on healthy cardiovascular/heart tissue. Following up on a doxorubicin toxicity study in mice without tumors where nitrate water was cardioprotective (lessened toxicity), this study with tumor‐bearing mice undergoing doxorubicin treatment showed no negative effect of nitrate and nitrite on drug ...

Diabetes‐induced vascular calcification is associated with low pyrophosphate and its oral supplementation prevents calcification in diabetic mice

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Induction of diabetes in three different mouse strains uniformly resulted in an increase in TNAP activity and a reduction in pyrophosphate (PPi) in the circulation. Inhibition of TNAP restored plasma PPi. Diabetes‐induced calcification in the media layer of the aorta was detected only in the Abcc6−/− strain, which is predisposed to ectopic ...

An unusual case of metastasis to the left side of the heart: a case report

open access: yesJournal of Medical Case Reports, 2011
Introduction Cardiac metastases are found in six to 20% of autopsies of patients with malignant neoplasm. The most common neoplasms that metastasize to the heart are malignant melanoma, lymphoma, and leukemia, but the relative numbers are greater with ...

The Aging Blood: Cellular Origins, Circulating Drivers, and Therapeutic Potential

open access: yesAging and Cancer, EarlyView.
As a conduit linking all organs, the blood system both reflects and actively drives systemic aging. This review highlights how circulating pro‐aging and antiaging factors and age‐associated hematopoietic stem cell dysfunction contribute to immunosenescence and multi‐organ decline, positioning the hematopoietic system as a target for aging intervention.

Hodgkin lymphoma as a rare cause of complete atrioventricular block: a case report

open access: yesКардиоСоматика
INTRODUCTION: Complete atrioventricular block is a life-threatening condition that requires urgent intervention and pacemaker implantation. Determining the underlying cause of the block is essential for effective management. This article describes a rare

Portable Low‐Field Magnetic Resonance Imaging in People With Human Immunodeficiency Virus

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective The aging population of people with HIV (PWH) raises heightened concerns regarding accelerated aging and dementia. Portable, low‐field MRI (LF‐MRI) is an innovative technology that could enhance access and facilitate routine monitoring of PWH.

Multimodality imaging in carcinoid heart disease

open access: yesOpen Heart, 2019
Neuroendocrine neoplasms arise from the gastrointestinal tract and can lead to carcinoid syndrome. Carcinoid heart disease affects more than half of these patients and is the initial presentation of carcinoid syndrome in up to 20 % of patients. Carcinoid

[Metastatic neoplasms of the heart].

open access: yesWiadomosci lekarskie (Warsaw, Poland : 1960), 1994
Two cases are presented of metastatic neoplasm of the heart easy for echocardiographic diagnosis. One infiltrated the pericardium with encapsulated fluid (visible also on X-ray), and the other was associated with filling of the right atrial lumen.
