A Comparison of Unbleached Pulps from Cherry Heartwood and Sapwood [PDF]

open access: yes, 1978
The purpose of the project was to evaluate pulps made from cherry heartwood and sapwood. The amount of heartwood a tree has is an individual trait of the tree rather than a function of geography or environment.

Community dynamics of lignicolous lichens on standing deadwood in a 275‐year chronosequence

open access: yesOikos, EarlyView.
Dead trees provide discrete habitat patches in which patch quality changes gradually due to wood decomposition. Although in most cases these patches persist for not more than a few decades, in some ecosystems deadwood decomposition and the consequent change in habitat patch quality can be a centuries‐long process, potentially leading to dynamics of ...

Tree crown architecture: a tool for decay resistance evaluation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
The variability of natural durability contributes to the bad perception of some wood end-users. In our search, we need to adjust our methods and strategies to estimate natural durability and extract higher value from wood resources.

Comparison between heat treated sapwood and heartwood from Pinus pinaster [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Sapwood and heartwood samples of Pinus pinaster were treated in an oven at 190ºC and 200ºC for 2-6h. Dimensional stability, measured as Anti Shrinking Efficiency (ASE) between 0% and 65% relative humidity, durability against fungi, mechanical ...

Internal physiological drivers of leaf development in trees: Understanding the relationship between non‐structural carbohydrates and leaf phenology

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, EarlyView.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Plant phenology is crucial for understanding plant growth and climate feedback. It affects canopy structure, surface albedo, and carbon and water fluxes. While the influence of environmental factors on phenology is well‐documented, the role of plant intrinsic factors ...

Analysis and evaluation of the impact of stand age on the occurrence and metamorphosis of red heartwood

open access: yesiForest - Biogeosciences and Forestry, 2017
The red heartwood of beech is responsible for decreasing the market value of the most important deciduous tree species of central Europe. The aims of this study were: (i) to verify the hypothesis that stand age affects the occurrence and metamorphosis of

In vitro and in vivo evidence of hypouricemic and anti-inflammatory activities of Maclura cochinchinensis (Lour.) Corner heartwood extract

open access: yesJournal of Traditional and Complementary Medicine, 2020
Maclura cochinchinensis (Lour.) Corner (MC) heartwood extracts have been used for the treatment of gout, hyperuricemia, and inflammation in Thai traditional medicine. Despite their traditional use, their mechanisms of action remain unknown.

Ring‐Width Dendrochronology, Isotopic Dendrochronology and Radiocarbon Dating of Timbers From the Spire Scaffold of Salisbury Cathedral, Wiltshire, England

open access: yesArchaeometry, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Ten timbers from the spire scaffold of Salisbury Cathedral were dated using a combination of ring‐width dendrochronology, stable oxygen isotopic dendrochronology and radiocarbon dating. Seven timbers were coeval and assigned a combined empirical felling date range of 1352–1378, which was further refined to 1351–1359 (OxCal 95.4%).

Tracing radioactive cesium in stem wood of three Japanese conifer species 3 years after the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant accident

open access: yesJournal of Wood Science, 2020
To understand the dynamics of accident-derived radioactive cesium (137Cs) in stem wood that had a substantial amount of heartwood at the time of the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant accident, the radial and vertical distributions of 137Cs activity ...

Evaluation of wood pretreatments on oak and cedar [PDF]

open access: yes, 1997
In a separate study, we conducted a series of high-precision radiocarbon measurements using wood from Britain and New Zealand to investigate interhemispheric offsets and possible temporal variations.
