Detection of electric resistivity tomography and evaluation of the sapwood-heartwood demarcation in three Asia Gymnosperm species

open access: yesSilva Fennica, 2012
The proportions of sapwood and heartwood of trees have significant impacts on various uses. Electric resistivity tomography (ERT) and corresponding electrical resistance (ER) value maps were examined in Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica D.

Effects of Heat Treatment on Durability of Merbau Heartwood

open access: yesBioResources, 2015
Merbau wood has been widely used in outdoor applications. However, it has a disadvantage in that its water-soluble extractives readily leach out and stain adjacent materials. Heat treatment is an efficient technique to solve this problem.

A Tell-Tale Heartwood [PDF]

open access: yesMicroscopy Today, 1999
Abstract In Medieval Europe, manuscripts and formulas on the preparation of colors and dyes used by chemists and artists contained many references to natural plant extracts, The yellow stigmas of aromatic saffron (Crocus sativus) were crushed and used both as a medicine and colorant as far back as the ninth century BCE.

Simulated CO2 Fertilization Drives Progressive Phosphorus Limitation via Accelerated Organic Cycling in Amazonian Forests

open access: yesGlobal Change Biology, Volume 32, Issue 7, July 2026.
Rising atmospheric CO2 increases phosphorus demand in Amazon forests. Using a microbial‐explicit land model in low and high phosphorus Amazonian forest sites, we show that low‐phosphorus forests increasingly rely on organic phosphorus cycling to sustain productivity.

Tree stem methane emissions are regulated by site‐level biogeochemistry over species identity in Amazon floodplain forests

open access: yesNew Phytologist, Volume 251, Issue 1, Page 179-190, July 2026.
Summary Tree stems in Amazonian floodplains emit substantial methane (CH4), yet controls on emission variability remain unclear. Emissions span orders of magnitude between várzea (nutrient‐rich) and igapó (nutrient‐poor) forests and among trees, suggesting controls beyond flooding.

Discovery of pseudobaptigenin synthase in fungal‐infected Trifolium pratense roots

open access: yesThe Plant Journal, Volume 127, Issue 1, July 2026.
Significance Statement The discovery of pseudobaptigenin synthase in red clover (CYP76F319), catalyzing the formation of a methylenedioxy bridge to convert calycosin to pseudobaptigenin. The integration of metabolomic and transcriptomic datasets to describe the defense response in red clover roots to hemibiotrophic and necrotrophic fungi.

Advances in the Study of Heartwood Formation in Trees. [PDF]

open access: yesLife (Basel)
Heartwood, serving as the central constituent of the xylem, plays a crucial role in the growth, development, and resilience of trees. The process of heartwood formation constitutes a complex biological phenomenon influenced by various factors. A thorough examination of the mechanisms underpinning heartwood formation not only enhances our understanding ...
