A Different Perspective on the Solid Lubrication Performance of Black Phosphorous: Friend or Foe?

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Researchers investigate black phosphorous (BP) as a standalone solid lubricant coating through ball‐on‐disc linear‐reciprocating sliding experiments in dry conditions. Testing on different metals shows BP doesn't universally reduce friction and wear. However, it achieves 33% friction reduction on rougher iron surfaces and 23% wear reduction on aluminum.

Microstructural investigation of the heat-affected zone of simulated welded joint of P91 steel

open access: yesMetalurgija, 2013
In the process of testing real components exposed to elevated temperature, it is not possible to neglect cracks. The most significant cracks can be induced by welding, which is applied for joining of structural components.

From Nature to Engineering: Mortar Volume and Interfacial Mechanics in Bioinspired Ceramics

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Inspired by natural armors like nacre, this study explores how varying the volume fraction of the soft mortar layer impacts the interfacial strength and toughness of bioinspired ceramics. Experimental and computational analysis reveals that higher mortar volumes increase energy dissipation but reduce interfacial stiffness, offering insights for ...

Microstructures of Heat-Affected Zone in Niobium Containing Steels

open access: yesMaterials Transactions, JIM, 1999
In order to understand the effect of niobium additions on the microstructures of the HAZ (heat-affected zone) in mild steels, a plain C-Mn steel (without niobium content) and three niobium containing steels with 0.01, 0.02 and 0.04 mass%Nb, respectively were investigated through simulated HAZ experiments with the heat inputs of 2 × 10 6 , 5 × 10 6 and

Influence of a Standard Heat Treatment on the Microstructure and Properties of Inconel X‐750 Produced by Laser Powder Bed Fusion

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Ni‐base superalloys produced using additive manufacturing (AM) have a different response to heat treatments when compared to their conventional counterparts. Due to such unpredictability, various alloys with industrial interest are currently overlooked in most prior AM research.

First‐Principles Modeling of Solid Solution Softening and Hardening Effects in Al–Mg–Zr–Si Aluminum Alloys

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The role of various alloying elements in face‐centered cubic aluminum on the barrier of a Shockley partial dislocation during its motion is presented. The study aims to understand how alloying atoms such as Mg, Si, and Zr affect the energy landscape for dislocation motion, thus influencing the solid solution hardening and softening in aluminum, which ...
