Selective mobilization of fatty acids in adipose tissue of heavy pigs

open access: yesAnimal, 2015
The mobilization of fatty acids during food deprivation is a selective process studied in different species (humans, rodents, birds, viverrids). The aim of this work was to study the effect of fasting on selective mobilization in commercial pigs. A total

Effects of Ochratoxin A on heavy pig production [PDF]

open access: yesAnimal Research, 2005
Ochratoxin A (OTA) is a widespread mycotoxin mainly produced by Aspergillus ochraceus and Penicillium verrucosum which can affect cereals and which occurs in meat and meat products. It has been demonstrated that OTA is nephrotoxic, hepatotoxic and carcinogenic in all mammalian species; pigs and poultry are the species most exposed to OTA toxicity.

The effects of clinoptilolite on piglet and heavy pig production

open access: yesItalian Journal of Animal Science, 2010
To evaluate the effects of clinoptilolite on piglet and heavy pig production two separated trials have been performed. In the first trial 40 pigs of the initial body weight of 55 kg were used. Animals were homogeneously allocated to two groups: a control

Locally Grown Crops and Immunocastration in Fattening Heavy Pigs: Effects on Performance and Welfare

open access: yesAnimals, 2022
This study aimed to explore dietary replacement soybean meal (SBM) with local pea seeds (PS-L) and the effects of surgically castrated (CM) or immunocastration (IM) in heavy male pigs, on growth performance, feeding behaviour, and tail and ear lesions ...

Cocoa husks in diets of Italian heavy pigs [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Animal Science, 2012
The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of cocoa husks feeding on liver composition of the Italian heavy pig. Cocoa husks are by-products derived from chocolate production and have a high content of proteins, lipids, and NDF. Cocoa husks are also rich in antioxidants, polyphenols in particular.

Effects of Pig Dietary n-6/n-3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids Ratio and Gender on Carcass Traits, Fatty Acid Profiles, Nutritional Indices of Lipid Depots and Oxidative Stability of Meat in Medium–Heavy Pigs

open access: yesFoods, 2023
The effects of different dietary n-6/n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) ratios and gender on key carcass traits, as well as the nutritional and technological quality of lipids in medium–heavy pig tissues have been poorly studied.

Relationship between growing pig’s housing conditions, behaviours, lesions and health issues under Italian farming system

open access: yesItalian Journal of Animal Science, 2023
Low space availability, high temperatures and a barren environment may contribute to the occurrence of abnormal behaviours and lesions in intensive pig farming. The present study evaluated the housing conditions (HCs), that influence behavioural measures
