SELF‐INCOMPATIBILITY IN CENTRAL AMERICANHELICONIA
Evolution, 1983Physiological self-incompatibility (SI) is one of the most common mechanisms by which outcrossing is promoted in the angiosperms (East, 1940; Whitehouse, 1950; Nettancourt, 1977). Considerable information on the taxonomic distribution of SI and the mechanisms of self-inhibition is available (e.g., Heslop-Harrison, 1975; Nettancourt, 1977).
