Evolution of UV reflection in bee‐ and bird‐pollinated flowers

open access: yesPlant Biology, Volume 28, Issue 1, Page 201-214, January 2026.
Pollinators shape floral UV reflection across angiosperms, supporting the bee‐avoidance hypothesis in red flowers and revealing mixed patterns in white and yellow flowers. Abstract Floral colour is a key trait mediating plant–pollinator interactions, with UV reflection hypothesized to evolve in response to the effectiveness of pollinators.

Comparison of four DNA extraction methods in Heliconia (Heliconia L.)

open access: yesAfrican Journal of Biotechnology, 2018
Molecular analysis in plants requires the use of high quality DNA. Currently, there are a myriad of DNA extraction protocols, which still seems that their applicability across different species is not straightforward. The aim of the present study was to evaluate four different cetyl trimethylammonium bromide (CTAB)-based DNA extraction protocols for ...

Valorization of Waste Grape Pomace: Effects on Growth, Flowering, and Leaf Nutrient Content of Dahlia variabilis sp. “Figaro” Violet

open access: yesJournal of Chemistry, Volume 2026, Issue 1, 2026.
Composting is a sustainable method widely used in the evaluation of organic wastes, and stabilized soil amendments and growing media can be obtained by this method. In this study, the effects of compost obtained from grape pomace on the growth and development of Dahlia variabilis “Figaro Violet” were investigated by adding 20% and 40% to the growing ...

New records of Heliconia (Heliconiaceae) for the region of Chajul, Southern Mexico, and their potential use in biodiversity-friendly cropping systems Nuevos registros de Heliconia (Heliconiaceae) para la región de Chajul, sur de México, y su uso potencial en plantaciones amigables de la biodiversidad

open access: yesRevista Mexicana de Biodiversidad, 2009
We report 4 new records of Heliconia species (Heliconiaceae) for the region of Chajul, one of the most studied sites of the Mexican Lacandona. Records are for H. champneiana Griggs cv. Maya Gold, H. latispatha Bentham cv. Orange Gyro, H.

Pollination ecology in the tropical Andes: moving towards a cross‐scale approach

open access: yesBiological Reviews, Volume 100, Issue 6, Page 2312-2345, December 2025.
ABSTRACT Plant–pollinator interactions structure ecological communities and represent a key component of ecosystem functioning. Pollination networks are expected to be more diverse and specialised in the tropics, but pollination ecology in these regions has been understudied in comparison to other areas.

Effect of hydration in vase life of two Heliconia cultivars

open access: yesOrnamental Horticulture, 2019
Ensuring extension of the vase life of Heliconia commercial stems is essential for the consumer acceptance process. For this, the objective of this research was to evaluate the effect of hydration on the vase life of two Heliconia cultivars.

Understorey bird responses to the abandonment of artisanal gold mining in Guyana

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 62, Issue 10, Page 2774-2786, October 2025.
Whilst many forest‐dependent birds will avoid the exposed mine centre, diversity at the immediate edge has the potential to recover, particularly in smaller and older mines. As we have found that natural vegetation recovery occurs at the mine edges and not within the centre, targeted restoration efforts might focus on mine edges to enhance recovery ...
