Melatonin and 5-methoxytryptophol (5-ML) in nervous and/or neurosensory structures of a gastropod mollusc (Helix aspersa maxima): synthesis and diurnal rhythms.

General and Comparative Endocrinology, 2003
Daily patterns of melatonin and 5-methoxytryptophol (5-ML) concentrations and of aryl alkylamine N-acetyltransferase (AA-NAT) and hydroxyindole-O-methyltransferase (HIOMT) activities have been measured in the cerebroid ganglions, visceral ganglions, and ocular tentacles of the gastropod mollusc Helix aspersa maxima.

Effect of temperature on haemolymphatic glucose and albumen gland polysaccharides during dormancy in the snail Helix aspersa maxima

Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology Part A: Physiology, 1993
Abstract 1. 1. In artificial hibernation at 6°C, a rapid decrease in haemolymph glucose concentration occurred up to the third month and thereafter decreased slowly. The wet weight of the female albumen gland increased and its glycogen content increased after the third month whereas galactogen levels remained constant. 2. 2.

Ultradian and circadian rhythmicity of behavioral activities in the young snail Helix aspersa maxima (Gastropoda, Helicidae)

Canadian Journal of Zoology, 1993
The rhythm of behavioral activities was studied in 8- to 100-day-old young snails (Helix aspersa maxima) and compared with that of adults. The animals were individually tested. Locomotor activity made up the main part of the total activity. The temporal distribution of feeding closely matches that of locomotion (involving displacement), while ...

The development of mesocerebral neurons in the snail Helix aspersa maxima

Canadian Journal of Zoology, 1992
The neurons in the right mesocerebrum of Helix aspersa participate in the control of sexual behaviour. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between reproductive development and the development of mesocerebral neurons. The growth of right mesocerebral neurons was quantified by intracellular filling cells with hexamminecobalt ...

Growth and srif-like substance(s) in the snail Helix aspersa maxima fed with an arginin-enriched food at different times of a short daily photophase

Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology Part A: Physiology, 1991
Abstract 1. 1. The study of the growth of Helix aspersa maxima bred under short light conditions and fed with a standard or arginin-enriched food supplied at different times of the photophase was performed using amino acid analysis and radioimmunoassays of SRIF-like substance(s). 2. 2. Arginin does not appear as a stimulant growth factor. 3.

Effect of temperature and photoperiod on growth and reproduction of Helix aspersa var. maxima

The Journal of Agricultural Science, 1998
Growth and reproduction of the snail Helix aspersa (Müller) var. maxima were examined at four combinations of temperature and artificial photoperiod and in transparent and opaque containers at two temperatures for over 40 weeks. Effects of temperature on both processes predominated.
