We validated the alkaline comet assay in two species of land snail (Helix aspersa and Helix vermiculata) to test their suitability as sentinels for primary DNA damage in polluted environments. The study was conducted under the framework of a biomonitoring program for a power station in Central Italy that had recently been converted from oil to coal ...

Specific adenosine phosphorylase from hepatopancreas of gastropod Helix pomatia
1. Specific adenosine phosphorylase from Helix pomatia hepatopancreas was separated from inosine-guanosine phosphorylase and purified 100-165 times; molecular weights were found to be 71,000 and 90,000, respectively. 2. The enzyme is specific for deoxy- and adenosine; it is inactive for 5'-methylthioadenosine and 5-amino-4-imidazole-carboxyamide ...

Juvenile Helix aspersa Müller exposed in field microcosms were used to assess the spatial and temporal bioaccumulation of Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn at two agricultural and two industrial sites in Lebanon. The study was performed over a 12-week period where caged snails were sampled once every 3 weeks and assessed for metal bioaccumulation and ...

Annexin-immunoreactive proteins in the nervous system and eye of the gastropods, Aplysia and Helix
We studied the distribution of annexin I- and annexin V-like proteins in the eye and central nervous system of the snails, Aplysia californica and Helix pomatia by immunocytochemistry. Annexin I-immunoreactive material in Aplysia californica was localized in sensory and corneal cells of the eye and in distinct neurons of the cerebral, buccal, and ...

The distribution of neuropeptide F (NPF) immunoreactivity in the snail, Helix aspersa, has been demonstrated by immunocytochemistry using 2 region-specific antisera. One, designated NPF3, was raised against a synthetic N-terminal fragment of Helix aspersa NPF; the other, designated PP221, was raised against the C-terminal hexapeptide amide of mammalian

Phenoloxidase Activity of Helix aspersa Maxima (Garden Snail, Gastropod) Hemocyanin
The oxygen-transporting protein, hemocyanin (Hc), of the garden snail Helix aspersa maxima (HaH) was isolated and kinetically characterized. Kinetic parameters of the reaction of catalytic oxidation of catechol to quinone, catalyzed by native HaH were determined: the V max value amounted to 22 nmol min(-1) mg(-1), k cat to 1.1 min(-1).

By using an antiserum raised against a crustacean beta-pigment-dispersing hormone (PDH), the distribution and chemical neuroanatomy of PDH-like immunoreactive neurons was investigated in the central nervous system of the gastropod snails, Helix pomatia and Lymnaea stagnalis.
