Oral water consumption in Helix aspersa Müller (Gastropod mollusc: Stylommatophora) according to age, reproductive activity and food supply

Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology Part A: Physiology, 1988
Abstract 1. 1. The brown garden snail Helix aspersa Muller, young or adult, takes in and absorbs water orally through its digestive system. 2. 2. During the first month, Helix aspersa is able to absorb 70% of its total weight, in water, daily.

Histaminergic neurons in the central and peripheral nervous system of gastropods (Helix, Lymnaea): An immunocytochemical, biochemical, and electrophysiological approach

Journal of Comparative Neurology, 2004
AbstractDistribution, chemical‐neuroanatomy, concentration, and uptake‐release properties of histamine (HA)‐containing neurons and the possible physiological effects of HA in the central and peripheral nervous system of the pulmonate snails,Helix pomatiaandLymnaea stagnalis, are described.

Nervous system and neural maps in gastropodHelix lucorum L.

Neuroscience and Behavioral Physiology, 1994
The present review summarizes the literature and provides new data concerning nervous system structure and the identification of individual neurons in the snail Helix lucorum. Information about especially well-known neurons is provided in a table, and maps of the identifiable neuron's location in ganglia are correlated with the results of retrograde ...

Localization and quantification of Cd- and Cu-specific metallothionein isoform mRNA in cells and organs of the terrestrial gastropod Helix pomatia

Toxicology and Applied Pharmacology, 2003
A quantitative assay based on real-time detection polymerase chain reaction (rtdPCR) was applied to analyze basal and metal-induced mRNA levels of two metallothionein (MT) isoforms (Cd-MT and Cu-MT) in organs of the terrestrial gastropod Helix pomatia.

Comparative study of the electrical and mechanical behaviour of an intact, semi-intact and isolated gastropode (Helix pomatia) smooth muscle preparation

Experientia, 1975

Isolation and characterization of an alpha-macroglobulin from the gastropod mollusc Helix pomatia with tetrameric structure and preserved activity after methylamine treatment.

Biochimica et biophysica acta, 2001
A proteinase inhibitor with M(r) 697000 and 20.3% (w/w) carbohydrate was isolated from the haemolymph of the snail Helix pomatia and characterized. It was shown to have a tetrameric structure with subunits disulphide linked by two. It inhibited the activity of several types of proteinases against large substrates but not that of trypsin against N-alpha-

[In vitro biosynthesis of octopamine by the nervous system and the heart of the mollusc gastropode Helix pomatia (author's transl)].

Experientia, 1979
The tyrosine is decarboxylated in vitro by the central nervous tissue and by the intracardiac nervous tissue of Helix pomatia by aromatic amino-acid decarboxylase. The tyramine obtained is then partially transformed into octopamine by tyramine-beta-hydroxylase. The inhibition of monoamine oxidase favours apparition of the 2 amines.
