Hemagglutination Assay for Antigen and Antibody Associated with Viral Hepatitis

Hemagglutination assays are described for measuring hepatitis-associated Australia antigen and antibody. Red cells coated with isolated antigen, with chromic chloride as a coupling agent, are used for detection of antibodies. Detection of the antigen in serums depends on inhibition of hemagglutination.

Potato lectin activity assay based on hemagglutination

AbstractA quantitative method for the determination of potato lectin activity has been developed. In the method, lectin is incubated with an excess of red blood cells (RBC) in phosphate buffered saline at 25 °C. Maximum agglutination is reached within 60 min. Agglutinated RBC are then separated from nonagglutinated RBC by filtration.

Reactivity of nonsensitized control erythrocytes in rubella passive hemagglutination assays

Two commercially available, nonsensitized control erythrocytes for use in rubella antibody passive hemagglutination assays detected nonspecific reactions in 10 of 600 (1.7%) and 9 of 500 (1.8%) sera tested. Reactive sera were positive with one or the other cell type, but not both.

Abstract Antibody to the d and y subtypes of hepatitis B antigen (HB Ag) was detected by a modification of the passive hemagglutination assay (PHA) for anti-HB Ag. With this technique, anti-d or anti-y activity could be detected in many sera negative for anti-HB Ag by counterelectrophoresis but positive by PHA.
