We report 2 cases of nephrolithiasis owing to hematin stones. One patient had no apparent explanation for this finding, while the other was receiving warfarin anticoagulation for a prosthetic aortic valve. The chemical nature, etiology and clinical features of hematin calculi are discussed.

Hematin therapy in porphyric attacks
Klinische Wochenschrift, 1980We report our experience with hematin in the treatment of 57 patients in porphyric attacks. The ratio of acute intermittent porphyria: variegate porphyria: hereditary coproporphyria was 43:11:3. More than 90% of the patients showed not only a decline in their porphyrin precursors, but also a favor able clinical response.
