Urinary Hematin Calculi

Journal of Urology, 1991
We report 2 cases of nephrolithiasis owing to hematin stones. One patient had no apparent explanation for this finding, while the other was receiving warfarin anticoagulation for a prosthetic aortic valve. The chemical nature, etiology and clinical features of hematin calculi are discussed.

Hematin therapy in porphyric attacks

Klinische Wochenschrift, 1980
We report our experience with hematin in the treatment of 57 patients in porphyric attacks. The ratio of acute intermittent porphyria: variegate porphyria: hereditary coproporphyria was 43:11:3. More than 90% of the patients showed not only a decline in their porphyrin precursors, but also a favor able clinical response.

Investigations of B- and β-hematin

Journal of Inorganic Biochemistry, 1997
The preparation from ferriprotoporphyrin IX (FP) in aqueous acid medium of the related pigments beta- and B-hematin [see G. Blauer and M. Akkawi, Biochem. Mol. Biol. Int. 35, 231 (1995)] is presented under different conditions. Both pigments are characterized by infrared spectra which differ in the range of 1600-1700 cm-1 in their strong bands with ...

Hematin Anhydride (Β-Hematin): An Analogue to Malaria Pigment Hemozoin Possesses Nonlinearity

Spectrochimica Acta Part A: Molecular and Biomolecular Spectroscopy, 2023
Hematin anhydride (β-hematin), the synthetic analogue of the malaria pigment, "hemozoin", is a heme dimer produced by reciprocal covalent bonds among carboxylic acid groups on the protoporphyrin-IX ring and the iron atom present in the two adjacent heme molecules. Hemozoin is a disposal product formed from the digestion of hemoglobin present in the red

Hematin and Porphyria

New England Journal of Medicine, 1975
The discovery that hematin represses induction of δ-aminolevulinic acid synthetase (ALA-S), the rate-limiting enzyme for hepatic porphyrin and heme synthesis,1 is central to recent studies seeking to provide a means of terminating or ameliorating the acute attack of acute intermittent porphyria, porphyria variegata or hepatic coproporphyria.

Hematin toxicity in rats

Toxicology Letters, 1978
The toxicity of intravenously administered hematin (3.4 and 6 mg100 g) was investigated in rats, where an LD50 of 4.32 mg100 g was computed, with 95% confidence limits of 5.40 and 3.46 mg100 g. At toxic levels (4 mg100 g) the rats showed a drop of blood pressure, hemorrhages and renal failure, whereas lower doses were well tolerated.

Shotgun Hematinic Therapy

Archives of Internal Medicine, 1978
Among the numerous throw-aways that the mailman delivers to my door are advertisements from pharmaceutical companies concerning drugs and related products. I recently received a set of complimentary starter prescriptions for a certain drug for the treatment of "iron deficiency anemia and megaloblastic anemia." The drug is composed of ferrous fumarate,

PEROXIDASE, HEMATIN, AND PEGYLATED-HEMATIN CATALYZED VINYL POLYMERIZATIONS IN WATER

Journal of Macromolecular Science, Part A, 2001
Horseradish peroxidase-, hematin- and pegylated-hematin mediated polymerization of sodium styrene sulfonate and sodium acrylate in water is reported. Molecular weight and yields were influenced by the concentrations of hydrogen peroxide and initiator, 2,4-pentanedione.
