Biliary excretion of exogenous hematin in rats
Life Sciences, 1977Abstract Rats with bile fistula were injected intravenously with single doses of hematin (5,10,20,30, and 40 mg/kg body weight). Bile samples were collected every 30 min. for 4 hours, and at longer time intervals thereafter. The concentration of hematin in the bile was measured spectrophotometrically at 590 nm.

The malaria parasite pigment, hemozoin, is a crystal of ferriprotoporphyrin IX (FP-Fe(III)), a product of hemoglobin digestion. Hemozoin formation is essential for FP-Fe(III) detoxification in the parasite; it is the main target of quinoline antimalarials and can modulate immune and inflammation responses.

Treatment of acute hepatic porphyria with hematin
Journal of Hepatology, 1988The efficacy of hematin has been evaluated in eight patients with acute intermittent porphyria: six with acute attacks and two with chronic subacute symptoms. Hematin suppressed the chemical signs of porphyria in all patients and the symptoms in those with acute attacks.

Journal of Inorganic Biochemistry, 2006Quinoline antimalarial drugs such as chloroquine and related compounds are believed to act by targeting ferriprotoporphyrin IX (Fe(III)PPIX) in the form of hematin (H(2)O/HO-Fe(III)PPIX), its mu-oxo dimer ([Fe(III)PPIX](2)O) or crystalline beta-hematin ([Fe(III)PPIX](2)) in the malaria parasite.
