Nonconventional Ca(OH) 2 treatment of bamboo for the reinforcement of cement composites [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
This study compares the structural and morphological changes in Guadua angustifolia Kunth (GAK) fiber prepared in three different ways (chips, barkless and crushed) when non-conventional alkaline treatment is applied.

Effects of P-Coumarate 3-Hydroxylase Downregulation on the Compositional and Structural Characteristics of Lignin and Hemicelluloses in Poplar Wood (Populus alba × Populus glandulosa)

open access: yesFrontiers in Bioengineering and Biotechnology, 2021
Elucidating the chemical and structural characteristics of hemicelluloses and lignin in the p-coumarate 3-hydroxylase (C3H) down-regulated poplar wood will be beneficial to the upstream gene validation and downstream biomass conversion of this kind of ...

Organosolv pretreatment of Sitka spruce wood: conversion of hemicelluloses to ethyl glycosides [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
A range of organosolv pretreatments, using ethanol:water mixtures with dilute sulphuric acid, were applied to Sitka spruce sawdust with the aim of generating useful co-products as well as improving saccharification yield.

Chemical characterization of black poplar (Populus nigra L.) sawdust hemicelluloses esterified with acyl chlorides

open access: yesTurkish Journal of Forestry, 2021
In the present study, hemicelluloses were isolated from black poplar (Populus nigra L.) sawdust, which is generated by the wood industry in large quantities as lignocellulosic waste. The monosaccharide composition of hemicelluloses was determined by gas

Fungal ecological strategies reflected in gene transcription - a case study of two litter decomposers. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Microbial communities interplay with their environment through their functional traits that can be a response or an effect on the environment. Here, we explore how a functional trait-the decomposition of organic matter, can be addressed based on genetic ...

Characteristics of the Water- and Alkali-Soluble Hemicelluloses Fractionated by Sequential Acidification and Graded-Ethanol from Sweet Maize Stems

open access: yesMolecules, 2019
Sweet maize stems were treated with hot water and potassium hydroxide to fractionate hemicellulosic polymers. The results showed that the water-soluble hemicelluloses were mainly composed of glucose (27.83%), xylose (27.32%), and galactose (16.81%).

Pretreatment of Hazelnut Shells as a Key Strategy for the Solubilization and Valorization of Hemicelluloses into Bioactive Compounds

open access: yesAgronomy, 2020
Hazelnut industries generate a large amount of byproducts. Among them, waste hazelnut shells (which account for about 50% of the nut weight), are potential raw materials to produce value added products.

Structural and Nutritional Peculiarities Related to Lifespan Differences on Four Lopesia Induced Bivalve-Shaped Galls on the Single Super-Host Mimosa gemmulata

open access: yesFrontiers in Plant Science, 2021
Super-host plants are elegant models to evaluate the peculiarities of gall structural and nutritional profiles due to the stimuli of distinct gall inducers in temporal and spatial perspectives. Galls induced by congeneric insects, Lopesia spp.

Lower oxidative damage and cell wall loosening, mediated or not by auxin, as part of the tolerance mechanism of Paubrasilia echinata morphotypes in the shade and full sun

open access: yesActa Botânica Brasílica, 2022
Paubrasilia echinata presents three morphotypes that differ from each other in leaf morphology (small morphotype-SM, medium morphotype-MM, and large morphotype-LM) with indications of divergence between them regarding irradiance tolerance.
