Blood pressure control with active ultrafiltration measures and without antihypertensives is essential for survival in hemodiafiltration and hemodialysis programs for patients with CKD: a prospective observational study

open access: yesBMC Nephrology
Background High blood pressure is a prevalent condition in patients with chronic kidney disease on hemodialysis. Adequate control of high blood pressure is essential to reducing deaths in this group.

Acute kidney injury in critically ill cancer patients : an update [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Patients with cancer represent a growing group among actual ICU admissions (up to 20 %). Due to their increased susceptibility to infectious and noninfectious complications related to the underlying cancer itself or its treatment, these patients ...

Machine learning‐based predictive models versus traditional risk scores in hemodialysis patients with comorbid urolithiasis

open access: yesPrecision Medical Sciences, EarlyView.
Machine learning‐based predictive models outperform traditional risk scores in hemodialysis patients with comorbid urolithiasis by capturing nonlinear, dialysis‐specific interactions. These approaches enable more accurate prediction of stone recurrence, sepsis, hospitalization, and mortality, supporting personalized risk stratification and precision ...

Real-world effectiveness of hemodialysis modalities: a retrospective cohort study

open access: yesBMC Nephrology
Background Results from the CONVINCE clinical trial suggest a 23% mortality risk reduction among patients receiving high-volume (> 23 L) hemodiafiltration.

How Much Is the Removed Amount of Potassium with On-Line Hemodiafiltration Affected by the Filter Surface?

open access: yesKidney and Dialysis
Introduction: The potassium removed by various dialysis methods (pre- and post-dilution on-line hemodiafiltration) is not clear in the literature. The aim of the study was to investigate the amount of potassium eliminated with each session of pre- or ...

Characterizing cardiac involvement in chronic kidney disease using CMR—a systematic review [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Purpose of Review: The aim of the review was to identify and describe recent advances (over the last 3 years) in cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD).

Comparison of Biocompatibility and Efficacy of Regional Citrate Anticoagulation and Unfractionated Heparin During Expanded Hemodialysis With a Medium Cut‐Off Membrane—A Randomized Trial

open access: yesArtificial Organs, EarlyView.
In a randomized cross‐over trial, regional citrate anticoagulation provided superior biocompatibility over full‐dose unfractionated heparin during expanded hemodialysis with significantly lower activation of complement, granulocytes, and platelets without affecting dialysis efficiency. ABSTRACT Background Regional citrate anticoagulation (RCA) improves

Erysense, a Lab-on-a-Chip-Based Point-of-Care Device to Evaluate Red Blood Cell Flow Properties With Multiple Clinical Applications

open access: yesFrontiers in Physiology, 2022
In many medical disciplines, red blood cells are discovered to be biomarkers since they “experience” various conditions in basically all organs of the body. Classical examples are diabetes and hypercholesterolemia.

A mathematical model of continuous arterio-venous hemodiafiltration (CAVHD) [PDF]

open access: yes, 1990
Continuous arterio-venous hemodiafiltration (CAVHD) differs from conventional hemofiltration and dialysis by the interaction of convection and diffusion, the use of very low dialysate flow rates and by the deterioration of membrane conditions during the ...

Determinants of Intradialytic Phosphate Removal in Hemodiafiltration From Real‐World Clinical Practice

open access: yesArtificial Organs, EarlyView.
We show that convective therapy in the form of hemodiafiltration does not demonstrate a measurable effect on phosphate removal in a real‐world setting. On the other hand, session duration is the most important factor in determining phosphate removal in hemodialysis patients.
