Truncated Hemoglobins 1 and 2 Are Implicated in the Modulation of Phosphorus Deficiency-Induced Nitric Oxide Levels in Chlamydomonas

open access: yesCells, 2019
Truncated hemoglobins (trHbs) form a widely distributed family of proteins found in archaea, bacteria, and eukaryotes. Accumulating evidence suggests that trHbs may be implicated in functions other than oxygen delivery, but these roles are largely ...

Subpar reporting of pre‐analytical variables in RNA‐focused blood plasma studies

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Pre‐analytical variables strongly influence the analysis of extracellular RNA (cell‐free RNA; exRNA) derived from blood plasma. Their reporting is essential to allow interpretation and replication of results. By evaluating 200 exRNA studies, we pinpoint a lack of reporting pre‐analytical variables associated with blood collection, plasma preparation ...

Role of the Subunits Interactions in the Conformational Transitions in Adult Human Hemoglobin: an Explicit Solvent Molecular Dynamics Study [PDF]

open access: yesJ. Phys. Chem. B 116, 11004 (2012), 2012
Hemoglobin exhibits allosteric structural changes upon ligand binding due to the dynamic interactions between the ligand binding sites, the amino acids residues and some other solutes present under physiological conditions. In the present study, the dynamical and quaternary structural changes occurring in two unligated (deoxy-) T structures, and two ...

Identification of functional and diverse circulating cancer‐associated fibroblasts in metastatic castration‐naïve prostate cancer patients

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Cancer‐associated fibroblasts (CAFs) promote cancer growth, invasion (metastasis), and drug resistance. Here, we identified functional and diverse circulating CAFs (cCAFs) in patients with metastatic prostate cancer (mPCa). cCAFs were found in higher numbers and were functional and diverse in mPCa patients versus healthy individuals, suggesting their ...

Robust acute myeloid leukemia engraftment in humanized scaffolds using injectable biomaterials and intravenous xenotransplantation

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Patient‐derived xenografts (PDXs) can be improved by implantation of a humanized niche. We tested different biomaterials and approaches, and demonstrate that the combination of an injectable biomaterial for scaffold creation plus an intravenous route for acute myeloid leukemia (AML) xenotransplantation provide the most convenient and robust approach to

Determining the Refractive Index of Human Hemoglobin Solutions by Kramers-Kronig Relations with an Improved Absorption Model [PDF]

open access: yesApplied Optics 55, 8951-8961 (2016), 2017
The real part of the refractive index (RI) of aqueous solutions of human hemoglobin is computed from their absorption spectra in the wavelength range $250\,{\rm nm} - 1100\,{\rm nm}$ using the Kramers-Kronig (KK) relations and the corresponding uncertainty analysis is provided.

Inhibition of acyl‐CoA synthetase long‐chain isozymes decreases multiple myeloma cell proliferation and causes mitochondrial dysfunction

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Triacsin C inhibition of the acyl‐CoA synthetase long chain (ACSL) family decreases multiple myeloma cell survival, proliferation, mitochondrial respiration, and membrane potential. Made with Biorender.com. Multiple myeloma (MM) is an incurable cancer of plasma cells with a 5‐year survival rate of 59%.

Aggregation of hemoglobin S and hemoglobin CHarlem with nonsickle hemoglobin in concentrated phosphate buffer [PDF]

open access: yesBlood, 1980
Abstract The effect of HbA and HbF on both the aggregation and deaggregation of deoxy HbS and deoxy HbCHarlem in concentrated phosphate buffers was studied by a turbidimetric method. Although pure deoxy HbA is fully soluble in 2.4 M potassium phosphate buffer, the same concentration of deoxy HbAS was insoluble in the same buffer.
