Hepatitis B Antigen and Prevention of Post-Transfusion Hepatitis B

Abstract. Screening for hepatitis B antigen (HBsAg) in the serum of blood donors and exclusion of antigen‐positive blood units have reduced the frequency of post‐transfusion hepatitis but several cases of hepatitis B still occur in association with transfusions. One explanation for this is probably that HBsAg is not an indicator of infectivity.

HEPATITIS-B ANTIGEN IN COLONY MOSQUITOES

Abstract Aedes aegypti mosquitoes were fed on or inoculated with blood or serum positive for hepatitis-B antigen (HBAg) or allowed to feed on the arm of an HBAg carrier. Pools of mosquitoes were tested by radioimmunoassay at intervals up to 45 days after exposure to HBAg. HBAg was detected long after the blood itself would have been digested.

The nature of hepatitis B e antigen

In recent years, considerable interest has developed in recognizing antigenic specificities additional to the surface antigen in the sera of patients infected with hepatitis B infection. The presence of the e-antigen appears to be invariably associated with ongoing virus replication.

Antibody to hepatitis B core antigen (anti-HBc) is a sensitive indicator of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. However, anti-HBc has been found in only a few patients with chronic hepatitis. Therefore, we tested for anti-HBc in 124 sera from 67 patients with histologically proven chronic hepatitis by the indirect fluorescent antibody technique.
