Human monoclonal antibodies to a novel cluster of conformational epitopes on HCV E2 with resistance to neutralization escape in a genotype 2a isolate [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
The majority of broadly neutralizing antibodies to hepatitis C virus (HCV) are against conformational epitopes on the E2 glycoprotein. Many of them recognize overlapping epitopes in a cluster, designated as antigenic domain B, that contains residues G530

IL28B, HLA-C, and KIR variants additively predict response to therapy in chronic Hepatitis C virus infection in a European cohort: A cross-sectional study

open access: yes, 2011
Background To date, drug response genes have not proved as useful in clinical practice as was anticipated at the start of the genomic era. An exception is in the treatment of chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotype 1 infection with pegylated interferon-

Prevalence and Incidence of Hepatitis C Virus in Hemodialysis Patients in British Columbia: Follow-up after a Possible Breach in Hemodialysis Machines

open access: yesCanadian Journal of Infectious Diseases and Medical Microbiology, 2009
BACKGROUND: A possible breach of the transducer protector in specific dialysis machines was reported in June 2004 in British Columbia (BC), which led to testing of hemodialysis patients for hepatitis C virus (HCV), hepatitis B virus (HBV) and HIV.

Burden and Correlates of Multiple Chronic Infections and Their Associations With Cancer Incidence in Chinese Adults: A Large Case‐Cohort Study

open access: yesInternational Journal of Cancer, EarlyView.
While several oncogenic pathogens cause site‐specific cancers, uncertainties remain about many other chronic infections and combined pathogen effects, especially in non‐Western populations. Using a large case–cohort study nested within the China Kadoorie Biobank, the authors found that co‐infection was common, with a mean of 10 pathogens per individual.

Early predictive efficacy of core antigen on antiviral outcomes in genotype 1 hepatitis C virus infected patients

open access: yesBrazilian Journal of Infectious Diseases, 2015
Response-guided therapy is of limited use in developing countries because hepatitis C virus RNA detection by sensitive molecular methods is time- and labor-consuming and expensive.

High prevalence of anti-HCV antibodies in two metropolitan emergency departments in Germany : a prospective screening analysis of 28,809 patients

open access: yes, 2012
Background and Aims: The prevalence of hepatitis C virus (HCV) antibodies in Germany has been estimated to be in the range of 0.4–0.63%. Screening for HCV is recommended in patients with elevated ALT levels or significant risk factors for HCV ...

Dendritic cell function in the setting of chronic hepatitis c infection and changes during antiviral treatment

open access: yes, 2009
The role of the innate immune system and in particular of dendritic cells, in the establishment of chronic hepatitis C has been studied quite extensively over the last few years but controversy remains as to whether a potential virus-induced defect in

Association between harm reduction intervention uptake and recent hepatitis C infection among people who inject drugs attending sites that provide sterile injecting equipment in Scotland

open access: yes, 2012
Prevalence of the hepatitis C virus (HCV) among people who inject drugs (PWID) in Scotland is high. The Scottish Government has invested significantly in harm reduction interventions with the goal of reducing HCV transmission among PWID.

Improving Linkage to the HCV Care Cascade in Nonspecialist Settings: Evaluation of the Performance and Triage Utility of the Elecsys HCV Duo Assay in Japan

open access: yesJournal of Clinical Laboratory Analysis, EarlyView.
In nonspecialist departments, most anti‐HCV–positive individuals do not proceed to RNA testing. The Elecsys HCV Duo assay simultaneously detects anti‐HCV antibodies and core antigen from a single blood draw and preferentially identifies patients with clinically meaningful viral loads.

Hepatitis B and C virus infection and diabetes mellitus: A cohort study

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2017
The role of hepatitis virus infection in glucose homeostasis is uncertain. We examined the associations between hepatitis B virus (HBV) or hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection and the development of diabetes in a cohort (N = 439,708) of asymptomatic ...
