Quaternary Climate Oscillations Shape Genetic Diversity and Spatial Structure of Viola hybanthoides (Violaceae) Endemic to Danxia Landscape

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 8, August 2026.
We adopted ddRAD‐seq and chloroplast genome sequencing to explore the genetic characteristics of the danxia‐endemic species Viola hybanthoides. This species exhibits extremely low within‐population genetic diversity and obvious genetic differentiation, which is mainly driven by habitat fragmentation, restricted gene flow and Quaternary climatic changes.

Species Turnover and Environmental Filtering Structure Plant Communities in Moist Temperate Forests

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 8, August 2026.
Plant biodiversity in moist temperate mountain forests is strongly structured by elevational and edaphic gradients that drive community differentiation over short spatial scales. Using integrated vegetation classification, diversity partitioning, and multivariate analyses, we show that species turnover, rather than nestedness, dominates beta diversity,

Contrasting Dispersal Histories Shape Distinct Evolutionary Trajectories Between Malesian and Pantropical Talipariti (Malvaceae)

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 8, August 2026.
Talipariti (Malvaceae) comprises two lineages with contrasting geographic ranges across Malesia: a pantropical sea hibiscus group and a Papuan group restricted to New Guinea and adjacent islands. Using phylogenomics, divergence‐time estimation, and quantitative biogeographical modelling applied to herbarium‐derived genomic data, we demonstrate that the

Chemical Profiles, Pharmacological Insights, and In Silico Studies of Antidesma montanum Blume: An Experimental and Computer‐Aided Approach

open access: yeseFood, Volume 7, Issue 4, August 2026.
Antidesma montanum, an edible wild plant, shows notable nutraceutical and pharmacological potential. Methanol extract profiling (GC–MS) identified bioactive metabolites. In vitro, in vivo, and in silico studies demonstrated significant antidiabetic, anthelmintic, anxiolytic, antidepressant, and antidiarrheal activities, supported by strong molecular ...

MICROWAVE DRYING OF HERBARIUM SPECIMENS

TAXON, 1985
SummaryThe authors propose the use of a microwave oven as a new rapid procedure for herbarium specimen drying. A comparison between the new method and the usual procedure is presented and discussed with regard to external appearance and morphological characteristics.

PREPARATION OF OPUNTIA HERBARIUM SPECIMENS

Haseltonia, 2007
Abstract We present a best-practice method for preparing high-quality Opuntia herbarium specimens, from collection methods to storage. A botanical press having wide, thick, wooden boards is used for cladode drying. A layer consisting of corrugated cardboard, absorbent paper, newspaper, and a thin wood laminate is placed between each cladode.

On herbarium specimen images and artificial intelligence

New Phytologist
Summary Digitized herbarium specimens are increasingly used to train artificial intelligence (AI) models in plant identification and other botanical applications. The abundant specimen images available in public repositories are especially amenable to AI. For instance, digitized herbarium sheets are relatively standardized – generally

THE HERBARIUM PRESERVATION OF CONIFER SPECIMENS

TAXON, 1979
SummaryThe adequate preservation of conifer specimens for the herbarium poses major problems concerned with the disintegration of material on drying. A new effective general method of treatment, which for the first time enables preservation to be achieved without disintegration, is described, and a schedule of treatment recommended.
