Studying plant DNA using modern molecular techniques such as DNA sequencing plays an important role in understanding evolutionary relationships, identification through DNA barcoding, conservation status, and many other aspects of plant biology.

This has been developed and found convenient where several technical assistants are mounting material from widely different plant groups, at limited bench space.

Inadequacies in Herbarium Specimens of Large Ferns
American Fern Journal, 1973During the past several years I have been involved in research on the tree fern genus Cnemidaria (Cyatheaceae). Although nearly 2,000 specimens have been available to me for examination, a startling number of these have been partially or totally inadequate for purposes of classification. A small number are of questionable value even for identification.
