Bovine Herpesvirus Type 2 is Closely Related to the Primate Alphaherpesviruses
Virus Genes, 1999Bovine herpesvirus type 2 (BoHV-2), also known as bovine mammillitis virus, is classified in the Family Herpesviridae, Subfamily Alphaherpesvirinae, and Genus Simplexvirus along with herpes simplex viruses type 1 and 2 (HSV-1 and HSV-2) and other primate simplexviruses on the basis of similarities in 4 genes within the 15 kb U(L) 23-29 cluster.

The ORF50/Rta gene has been shown to be an essential gene for many gammaherpesviruses. Although the BoHV-4 ORF50/Rta homolog, immediate early gene 2 (IE2), has been shown to activate several BoHV-4 early and late promoters in cotransfection assays, there is no direct proof of its indispensability for progression of the virus to the lytic replication ...

Bovine Herpesvirus 2 Infections
1989Bovine herpesvirus 2 (BHV2) (1) is established as the specific cause of two distinct diseases of cattle. These are pseudo-lumpy skin disease (PLSD) which is caused by Allerton or related strains of BHV2 (2) and Bovine herpes mammillitis (BHM) which is caused by BMV or related strains of BHV2 (3).

Production of interferon by bovine peripheral blood monocytes infected with bovid herpesvirus 2
Veterinary Microbiology, 1983The production of interferon by bovine peripheral blood leukocytes infected with bovid herpesvirus 2 (BHV-2) was investigated in preparation for studying mechanisms of resistance to BHV-2. It was found that bovine peripheral blood monocytes produced high levels of interferon in response to BHV-2 inoculated at a multiplicity of 1.

Distribution of latent bovine herpesvirus 2 DNA in tissues of experimentally infected sheep
Research in Veterinary Science, 2009The biology of latent infection by bovine herpesvirus 2 (BoHV-2), the agent of mammillitis in cows, remains largely unknown. We herein report attempts to reactivate the latent infection and investigated the sites of BoHV-2 latency in experimentally infected sheep. Ewes inoculated with BoHV-2 in the udder's skin shed virus for up to five days, developed

Serological study of human herpesvirus simplex 1 and bovine herpesvirus 1, 2, and 4 in Kansas cattle
The Bovine Practitioner, 1989A total of 589 beef cattle and 466 dairy cattle were tested for antibodies to herpes simplex virus-1 (HSV-1) and bovine herpes virus-1, 2, and 4 (BHV) using the indirect fluorescent antibody test (IFAT). In the beef cattle, prevalence of antibodies to HSV-1, BHV-1, 2, and 4 was 34.8%, 67.9%, 36.5% and 12.4% respectively, and in the dairy cattle ...

Methyl 2-pyridyl ketone thiosemicarbazone (MPKT) was found to inhibit bovine herpesvirus-1 (BHV-1) at an ED50 concentration of approximately 5-10 microM. Several virus strains were shown to have similar sensitivity to the drug and serial passage of virus in the presence of MPKT failed to yield resistant progeny.

The causal agent of sheep-associated malignant catarrhal fever (MCF), Ovine Herpesvirus-2 (OHV-2), can be propagated in IL-2-dependent lymphoblastoid cell lines derived from diseased cattle and deer providing a useful model for the investigation of the pathogenesis of MCF.

Apoptosis, 2008
Exposure to environmental contaminants, like 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD), leads to an increased susceptibility to infectious agents. Infection of bovine cells (MDBK) with Bovine Herpesvirus 1 (BHV-1) anticipates virus-induced apoptosis, suggesting an involvement of TCDD in virus infection.
