Inherited IRAK-4 Deficiency in Acute Human Herpesvirus-6 Encephalitis
Human herpesvirus-6 (HHV-6) infection can rarely cause life-threatening conditions, such as encephalitis, in otherwise healthy children, with unclear pathogenesis. We studied a child who presented with acute HHV-6 encephalitis at the age of 10 months and who was homozygous for a novel missense mutation in IRAK4, encoding interleukin-1 receptor ...

Evidence of Human Herpesvirus 6 Infection in 4 Immunocompetent Patients with Encephalitis [PDF]
We describe 4 patients with encephalitis due to possible reactivation of human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6) infection who were enrolled in the California Encephalitis Project. All were immunocompetent and had HHV-6 loads determined in cerebrospinal fluid specimens. Tests for detection of HHV-6 should be considered for individuals with encephalitis.

Bovine Herpesvirus 4 Induces Apoptosis of Human Carcinoma Cell Lines In vitro and In vivo [PDF]
Abstract The idea of using oncolytic viruses for the treatment of cancers was proposed a century ago. During the last two decades, viruses able to replicate specifically in cancer cells and to induce their lysis were identified and were genetically modified to improve their viro-oncolytic properties.

Kaposi's Sarcoma-Associated Herpesvirus (Human Herpesvirus 8) Open Reading Frame 4 Protein (Kaposica) Is a Functional Homolog of Complement Control Proteins [PDF]
ABSTRACTThe genome analysis of Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) has revealed the presence of an open reading frame (ORF 4) with sequence homology to complement control proteins. To assign a function to this protein, we have now expressed this ORF using thePichiaexpression system and shown that the purified protein inhibited human ...

Multiple sclerosis, human herpesvirus 4 and thyroid collision tumor: A case report
The role of interferon β-1b (IFNβ-1b), used for multiple sclerosis (MS) therapy, in cancer occurrence is uncertain. There is evidence supporting the role of human herpesvirus 4 [Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)] in thyroid cancer and MS. Simultaneous occurrence of papillary and medullary carcinomas is rare, and its association with MS in a young woman raises ...

Replication of Bovine Herpesvirus Type 4 in Human Cells In Vitro [PDF]
ABSTRACTA reference strain (Movár 33/63) of bovine herpesvirus type 4 (BHV-4) was inoculated into 14 different human cell lines and five primary cell cultures representing various human tissues. BHV-4 replicated in two embryonic lung cell lines, MRC-5 and Wistar-38, and in a giant-cell glioblastoma cell culture.
