Genetic variations among pacific herring (Clupea pallasii Val.) from the Okhotsk Sea and Lake Ainskoye by microsatellite loci

open access: yesИзвестия ТИНРО, 2016
Genetic variation among spawning groups of pacific herring from different spawning grounds in the northwestern Okhotsk Sea and Lake Ainskoye (Sakhalin Island) is assessed by 11 microsatellite loci. All loci were polymorphic.

High potential for using DNA from ancient herring bones to inform modern fisheries management and conservation. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2012
Pacific herring (Clupea pallasi) are an abundant and important component of the coastal ecosystems for the west coast of North America. Current Canadian federal herring management assumes five regional herring populations in British Columbia with a high ...

Baltic herring prey selectively on older copepodites of Eurytemora affinis and Limnocalanus macrurus in the Gulf of Riga

open access: yesOceanologia, 2016
Zooplankton availability is a major factor affecting herring body condition that in turn describes its well-being. As herring feeding is known to be selective, it is relevant to access its preferences upon zooplankton species and particular copepod ...

Herring supports Northeast Pacific predators and fisheries: Insights from ecosystem modelling and management strategy evaluation. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2018
This paper analyzes the trophic role of Pacific herring, the potential consequences of its depletion, and the impacts of alternative herring fishing strategies on a Northeast Pacific food web in relation to precautionary, ecosystem-based management.

Mental Models for Assessing Impacts of Stormwater on Urban Social–Ecological Systems

open access: yesUrban Science, 2023
Managing social–ecological systems that benefit both humans and nature is the central challenge of natural resource management. Integrating multiple perspectives into decision-making adds flexibility to social–ecological systems by reducing rigidity and ...

The effects of herring-roe lyophilized powder on lipid metabolism

open access: yesJournal of Traditional and Complementary Medicine, 2016
Herring-roe, which contains large amounts of docosahexaenoic acid and eicosapentaenoic acid, has anti-dyslipidemia effects. Here, we evaluated the effects of herring-roe on lipid metabolism in 33 adult subjects in a randomized, double-blind, placebo ...

Alginate/Pectin Film Containing Extracts Isolated from Cranberry Pomace and Grape Seeds for the Preservation of Herring

open access: yesFoods, 2023
Alginate/pectin films supplemented with extracts from cranberry pomace (CE) or grape seeds (GE) were developed and applied to herring fillets that were stored for 18 days at 4 °C.

Structure and Characterization of Phosphoglucomutase 5 from Atlantic and Baltic Herring—An Inactive Enzyme with Intact Substrate Binding

open access: yesBiomolecules, 2020
Phosphoglucomutase 5 (PGM5) in humans is known as a structural muscle protein without enzymatic activity, but detailed understanding of its function is lacking.

Microplastic Intake, Its Biotic Drivers, and Hydrophobic Organic Contaminant Levels in the Baltic Herring

open access: yesFrontiers in Environmental Science, 2019
It is commonly accepted that microplastic (MP) ingestion can lead to lower food intake and bioaccumulation of hydrophobic organic contaminants (HOCs) in aquatic organisms.

Stock collapse and its effect on species interactions: Cod and herring in the Norwegian‐Barents Seas system as an example

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, 2021
Both the Norwegian Spring Spawning herring (Clupea harengus) and the Northeast Arctic (NEA) cod (Gadus morhua) are examples of strong stock reduction and decline of the associated fisheries due to overfishing followed by a recovery.
