Appropriating Heuristic Evaluation Methods for Mobile Computing [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
Heuristic evaluation has proven popular for desktop and web interfaces, both in practical design and as a research topic. Compared to full user studies, heuristic evaluation can be highly cost-effective, allowing a large proportion of usability flaws to ...

Task‐Oriented Path Planning Towards Autonomous Sensor Network Deployment in Rainforest Canopies

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
An informative path planner for drone‐based deployment of wireless sensor networks in rainforest canopies is presented, addressing key challenges in large‐scale biodiversity monitoring. By integrating canopy surface detection with connectivity‐aware sampling under strict flight constraints, the approach enables efficient and reliable aerial sensor ...

Autonomous Navigation of Pollen‐Inspired Magnetic Microrobots for Biomedical Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
A sunflower pollen‐inspired magnetic microrobot enables controlled rolling navigation in vessel‐like environments. Its open geometry reduces hydrodynamic drag, while vision‐based closed‐loop control, shortest‐path planning, and reinforcement learning support target‐reaching and maze navigation with microrobot‐scale accuracy, highlighting a route toward

Consensus Formation and Change are Enhanced by Neutrality

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Neutral agents are shown to enhance both the formation and overturning of consensus in collective decision‐making. A general mathematical model and experiments with locusts and humans reveal that neutrality enables robust consensus via simple interactions and accelerates consensus change by reducing effective population size.

Robust Portfolio Optimization with a Hybrid Heuristic Algorithm [PDF]

open access: yes
Estimation errors in both the expected returns and the covariance matrix hamper the constructing of reliable portfolios within the Markowitz framework. Robust techniques that incorporate the uncertainty about the unknown parameters are suggested in the ...
