Simple heuristics: The foundations of adaptive social behavior

open access: yes, 2012
This chapter shows how simple heuristics can be an essential tool for navigating the complexities and vagaries of social environments. The research program on the nature of social rationality presented here can be summarized by the following theses: As ...

Auditory–Tactile Congruence for Synthesis of Adaptive Pain Expressions in RoboPatients

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
In this work, we explore auditory–tactile congruence for synthesizing adaptive vocal pain expressions in robopatients. Using a robopatient platform that integrates vocal pain sounds with palpation forces, we conducted 7680 trials across 20 participants.

Beam search heuristics for quadratic earliness and tardiness scheduling [PDF]

open access: yes
In this paper, we present beam search heuristics for the single machine scheduling problem with quadratic earliness and tardiness costs, and no machine idle time. These heuristics include classic beam search procedures, as well as filtered and recovering

Evaluation of Subject-Specific Heuristics for Initial Learning Environments: A Pilot Study [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Heuristic evaluation is a “discount” technique for finding usability problems in well-established domains. This paper presents thirteen suggested heuristics for initial learning environments (ILEs).

A State‐Adaptive Koopman Control Framework for Real‐Time Deformable Tool Manipulation in Robotic Environmental Swabbing

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
This work presents a state‐adaptive Koopman linear quadratic regulator framework for real‐time manipulation of a deformable swab tool in robotic environmental sampling. By combining Koopman linearization, tactile sensing, and centroid‐based force regulation, the system maintains stable contact forces and high coverage across flat and inclined surfaces.

ChicGrasp: Imitation‐Learning‐Based Customized Dual‐Jaw Gripper Control for Manipulation of Delicate, Irregular Bio‐Products

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
Automated poultry processing lines still rely on humans to lift slippery, easily bruised carcasses onto a shackle conveyor. Deformability, anatomical variance, and hygiene rules make conventional suction and scripted motions unreliable. We present ChicGrasp, an end‐to‐end hardware‐software co‐designed imitation learning framework, to offer a ...

A Study of Evolutionary Algorithm Selection Hyper-Heuristics for the One-Dimensional Bin-Packing Problem

open access: yesSouth African Computer Journal, 2012
Hyper-heuristics are aimed at providing a generalized solution to optimization problems rather than producing the best result for one or more problem instances.

Coherence and correspondence in the psychological analysis of numerical predictions [PDF]

open access: yesJudgment and Decision Making, 2009
Numerical predictions are of central interest for both coherence-based approaches to judgment and decisions --- the Heuristic and Biases (HB) program in particular --- and to correspondence-based approaches --- Social Judgment Theory (SJT). In this paper

New heuristics to minimize the mean flow time for static permutation flowshop problems

open access: yes, 2005
This paper presents three new heuristic procedures in an attempt to improve the solution’s quality of an earlier proposed heuristic in the literature.
