Optimal body mass-length ratio during hibernation for Emys orbicularis (Linnaeus, 1758) – European Pond Turtle

open access: yesHeliyon, 2021
The aim of this study was to determine optimal body mass/length ratios of Emys orbicularis before hibernation. We obtained 213 measurements of wild-caught and captive-bred turtles during 9 years (2011–2019) and determined regression curves that show ...

Subterranean environments contribute to three‐quarters of classified ecosystem services

open access: yesBiological Reviews, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Beneath the Earth's surface lies a network of interconnected caves, voids, and systems of fissures forming in rocks of sedimentary, igneous, or metamorphic origin. Although largely inaccessible to humans, this hidden realm supports and regulates services critical to ecological health and human well‐being.

Dietary Lipids Affect the Onset of Hibernation in the Garden Dormouse (Eliomys quercinus): Implications for Cardiac Function

open access: yesFrontiers in Physiology, 2018
Dietary lipids strongly influence patterns of hibernation in heterotherms. Increased dietary uptake of n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), particularly of linoleic acid (LA, C18:2 n-6), enables animals to reach lower body temperatures (Tb ...

What is winter? Modeling spatial variation in bat host traits and hibernation and their implications for overwintering energetics

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, 2021
White‐nose syndrome (WNS) has decimated hibernating bat populations across eastern and central North America for over a decade. Disease severity is driven by the interaction between bat characteristics, the cold‐loving fungal agent, and the hibernation ...

Placental crises: disruptive selection and maternal under‐investment as the foundations of mammalian placental evolution and dysfunction

open access: yesBiological Reviews, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Among the vertebrates, mammals are notable for the dominance of live birth and placental nutrition. The structural diversity of the mammalian placenta is remarkable, despite sharing a single common ancestor and conserved physiological functions.

Elevated plasma phospholipid n-3 docosapentaenoic acid concentrations during hibernation.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2023
Factors for initiating hibernation are unknown, but the condition shares some metabolic similarities with consciousness/sleep, which has been associated with n-3 fatty acids in humans.

Induction of Hibernation and Changes in Physiological and Metabolic Indices in Pelodiscus sinensis

open access: yesBiology, 2023
Pelodiscus sinensis (P. sinensis) is a commonly cultivated turtle species with a habit of hibernation. To study the changes in histone expression and methylation of P. sinensis during hibernation induction, a model was established by artificial induction.

Consumer Mobile Phone Recycling Behaviour: A Systematic Review and Future Research Agenda

open access: yesJournal of Consumer Behaviour, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Mobile phone recycling has received increasing attention from scholars and practitioners due to its environmental, social, and economic impacts. However, knowledge about consumer mobile phone (MP) recycling behaviour is fragmented, making it challenging to develop effective strategies to promote this behaviour. This study follows the Preferred

Creativity and its link to epilepsy

open access: yesEpilepsia Open, EarlyView.
Abstract Creative thinking represents one of our highest‐order cognitive processes, involving multiple cortical structures and an intricate interplay between several cortical and subcortical networks. It results in novel ideas that translate to useful products or concepts. The evolutionary purpose of creativity is therefore apparent, as it advances our

Population dynamics of Townsend's big‐eared bats: effect of age and drought on survival

open access: yesThe Journal of Wildlife Management, EarlyView.
We estimated age‐specific yearly survival of female Townsend's big‐eared bats in Inyo and Mono Counties, California. We found that both juvenile and adult survival were negatively impacted by drought, and that detection probability was lower for hand‐recapture than for bats detected via pass‐through antenna arrays.
