The unusual, high-mass-ratio contact binary VZ PISCIUM

open access: yesThe Astronomical Journal, 1989
Radial-velocity curves have been determined for the short-period W UMa type binary VZ Psc using the cross-correlation method. These yield a mass ratio of 0.92 + or - 0.03, a value closer to unity than that reported for any other W UMa binary thus far. Strong Ca II H and K emission is associated with each component.

Hijacking emergency granulopoiesis: Neutrophil ontogeny and reprogramming in cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Neutrophils are highly plastic innate immune cells; their functions in cancer extend beyond the tumour microenvironment. This Review summarises current understanding of neutrophil maturation and heterogeneity and highlights tumour‐induced granulopoiesis as a systemic programme that expands immature, immunosuppressive neutrophils via tumour‐derived ...

A modified particle contact model for matching the ratios of uniaxial compressive to tensile strength of brittle rocks

open access: yesGeomechanics and Geophysics for Geo-Energy and Geo-Resources, 2023
The Hertz-Mindlin with bonding (HMB) contact model in the commercial discrete element method (DEM) software EDEM is widely used to simulate and analyze the mechanical behavior of rocks.

A novel quinazolinone insulin receptor inhibitor and its synergy with an EGFR inhibitor in glucose‐driven glioblastoma

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
The novel styrylquinazolinone‐based molecule W1B effectively suppresses glioblastoma by inhibiting IGF1R and EGFR. In high‐glucose microenvironments driving tumor resistance, W1B acts synergistically with the EGFR inhibitor dacomitinib. This combination safely blocks compensatory survival signaling in zebrafish xenograft models. Showcasing promising in

Geometry and parameter design of novel circular arc helical gears for parallel-axis transmission

open access: yesAdvances in Mechanical Engineering, 2017
Based on the space curve meshing equation, in this article, a geometry design of a novel circular arc helical gear mechanism with pure rolling for parallel transmission was presented.

Patient therapy outcome modeling in cancer organoids is improved by cancer‐associated fibroblasts and organoid assembly convolution

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Patient‐derived organoids (PDOs) from pancreatic, colorectal, and gastric cancers were used to evaluate standard and experimental therapies. Incorporating cancer‐associated fibroblasts (CAFs) into organoid cultures improved patient therapy outcome prediction.

Single‐molecule DNA flow‐stretch assays for high‐throughput DNA–protein interaction studies

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
We describe an optimised single‐molecule DNA flow‐stretch assay that visualises DNA–protein interactions in real time. Linear DNA fragments are tethered to a surface and stretched by buffer flow for fluorescence imaging. Using λ and φX174 DNA, this protocol enhances reproducibility and accessibility, providing a versatile approach for studying diverse ...

Molecular dynamics simulations of positively selected codons in FcγRI reveal novel biochemical binding properties

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Evolutionary analysis across 32 placental mammals identified positive selection at residues H148 and W149 in the immune receptor FcγR1. Ancestral reconstruction combined with molecular dynamics simulations reveals how these mutations may influence receptor structure and dynamics, providing insight into the evolution of antibody recognition and immune ...

Reduction of Vibration in Spur Gears by an Asymmetric Tooth Profile With High Contact Ratio

open access: yes, 2017
Gear drive is a mechanism transmitting a power and a motion through the teeth contact. The number of teeth in contact changes during a mesh cycle. That raises a discontinuity of the mesh stiffness, and causes a gear vibration. The discontinuity implies a

Effects of surface defects on rolling contact fatigue of 60/40 brass [PDF]

open access: yes, 1999
A study into effects of surface defects on rolling contact fatigue of 60/40 brass under a maximum contact pressure of 600 MPa and a slide–roll ratio of ?1% was undertaken on a twin-disc rolling–sliding test machine.
