Microglial Pruning of Excitatory Synapses in the Hippocampus Is Complement C3‐Independent in Physiological and Neuroinflammatory States

open access: yesGlia, Volume 74, Issue 7, July 2026.
In development, microglia engulfment of hippocampal excitatory synapses is unperturbed in C3‐lacking mice. Peripheral inflammation induces a neuroinflammatory phenotype and synapse loss in the hippocampus independent of complement cascade activation. ABSTRACT A key feature of brain development is the refinement of exuberant synapses, known as synapse ...

Rapid generation of prion disease models using AAV‐delivered PrP variants in knockout mice

open access: yesBrain Pathology, Volume 36, Issue 4, July 2026.
We developed a rapid AAV‐based system to generate prion disease models in weeks rather than months. Following systemic AAV9P31 delivery of modified PrP to knockout mice, we achieved brain‐wide expression and successful propagation of both classical (RML) and atypical (GSS‐A117V) prion strains.

Blood biomarkers of Alzheimer's disease and 15‐year decline in cognitive and motor functions in older adults

open access: yesJournal of Internal Medicine, Volume 300, Issue 1, Page 64-77, July 2026.
Abstract Background Individuals showing concurrent and rapid declines in cognitive and motor performance (i.e., dual decliners) are at increased risk of faster progression to dementia. Still, the role of Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology in motor/cognitive joint trajectories remains poorly understood.

Synchrotron XRF Imaging Reveals Manganese Accumulation in the Golgi and Post‐Synapses of Neurons and Enhanced Uptake in Astrocytes

open access: yesAdvanced Science, Volume 13, Issue 34, 19 June 2026.
Despite widespread exposure, the mechanisms of manganese neurotoxicity remain poorly understood. Using correlative cryogenic fluorescence and synchrotron X‐ray fluorescence imaging techniques, we show that the Golgi apparatus is the primary accumulation site for manganese in both neurons and astrocytes, and that manganese targets the neuronal ...

A lifespan staging model of basal forebrain cholinergic vulnerability

open access: yesAlzheimer's &Dementia, Volume 22, Issue 6, June 2026.
Abstract The cholinergic neurons of the basal forebrain are among the most vulnerable cell types to age‐ and Alzheimer's disease‐related dysfunction and neurodegeneration. However, the biological bases of basal forebrain cholinergic vulnerability (the why) and the temporal sequence (the how) have yet to be fully resolved.
