Programmed cell death pathways coordinate neutrophil and macrophage clearance in zebrafish and are differentially exploited by Salmonella Typhimurium

open access: yesCell Death and Disease
Programmed cell death (PCD) is essential for immune cell homeostasis and host defense, yet its role in neutrophil and macrophage elimination during bacterial infections remains poorly understood.

Vitamin D deficiency induces erectile dysfunction: Role of superoxide and Slpi

open access: yesBritish Journal of Pharmacology, Volume 182, Issue 15, Page 3669-3687, August 2025.
Background and Purpose Epidemiological studies suggest a relationship between vitamin D deficiency and erectile dysfunction (ED). We hypothesized that vitamin D deficiency or vitamin D receptor (VDR) knockout causes ED and analysed the underlying molecular mechanisms.

Unveiling disparity: A call to action for gender diversity in anatomy journal editorial teams

open access: yesAnatomical Sciences Education, Volume 18, Issue 6, Page 558-567, June 2025.
Abstract This study aimed to determine the representation of women on the editorial teams of anatomy journals and to investigate the possible reasons for gender differences. The anatomy journals listed in the Web of Science Master Journal List and on the International Federations of Associations of Anatomy website were evaluated.

Deciphering opening mechanisms of 14‐3‐3 proteins

open access: yesProtein Science, Volume 34, Issue 4, April 2025.
Abstract The 14‐3‐3 proteins are a highly conserved family of regulatory molecules that play crucial roles in various cellular processes. They are known for their ability to bind to phosphorylated serine and threonine residues on target proteins, which allows them to modulate their activity, localization, and stability.

14-3-3γ Knockdown promotes matrix mineralization in human mesenchymal stromal cells

open access: yesCell Death and Disease
The 14-3-3 proteins are emerging as important modulators of osteoblast differentiation and function. Recent studies highlight specific roles of 14-3-3 paralogs in bone physiology, with their dysregulation linked to impaired skeletal homeostasis and bone ...

Melanisation in Salmonid Skeletal Muscle: A Review

open access: yesJournal of Fish Diseases, Volume 48, Issue 3, March 2025.
ABSTRACT Melanisation can occur in the musculature of fish. A well‐known form is the melanised focal changes, or ‘black spots’, in the fillet of farmed Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar). The aetiology of black spots has not been fully determined, though recent research has emphasised the role of fat necrosis in their development.

Rewriting nuclear epigenetic scripts in mitochondrial diseases as a strategy for heteroplasmy control

open access: yesEMBO Molecular Medicine
Mitochondrial diseases, caused by mutations in nuclear or mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA), have limited treatment options. For mtDNA mutations, reducing the mutant-to-wild-type mtDNA ratio (heteroplasmy shift) is a promising strategy, though it currently faces

Full‐spectrum cannabidiol reduces UVB damage through the inhibition of TGF‐β1 and the NLRP3 inflammasome

open access: yesPhotochemistry and Photobiology, Volume 101, Issue 1, Page 83-105, January/February 2025.
Photoprotective and antiinflammatory benefits of full‐spectrum cannabidiol (FS‐CBD) against UVB‐induced cellular death were examined in this study. FS‐CBD protected against UVB‐induced bacterial death for 30 min. FS‐CBD protected against UVB‐induced cells, in an in vitro keratinocyte cell model.

Evaluating use of two‐step International Ovarian Tumor Analysis strategy to classify adnexal masses identified in pregnancy: pilot study

open access: yesUltrasound in Obstetrics &Gynecology, Volume 64, Issue 6, Page 808-817, December 2024.
ABSTRACT Objectives The primary aim was to validate the International Ovarian Tumor Analysis (IOTA) benign simple descriptors (BDs) followed by the Assessment of Different NEoplasias in the adneXa (ADNEX) model, if BDs cannot be applied, in a two‐step strategy to classify adnexal masses identified during pregnancy. The secondary aim was to describe the
